Research Activities

Research conducted by faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students within the Center focus on various aspects of natural language structure and processing, as well as computational algorithms for describing these structures and implementing these processing mechanisms. Both spoken and signed languages are topics of study. Research programs are distributed among several departments whose faculty hold joint appointments in the Center.

Particular strengths of the Center are represented in the following topics:

  • Structure of human language
  • Structure of signed languages
  • Language acquisition
  • Language documentation and description
  • Language change and dialectology
  • Relationship between music and language
  • Quantitative Semantics
  • On-line processing of spoken language
  • Computational models of language structure
  • Machine implementations of natural language understanding
  • Formal models of language structure
