AnnouncementsUniversity password resets required for everyone: The FBI recently sent a nationwide warning that cyber ransomware attacks on hospital systems are imminent. The Medical Center has urgently communicated to its faculty, staff, and students the need for them to change their University passwords as soon as possible. Because this cybersecurity threat has the potential to severely affect the entire University system, all faculty, staff, and students University-wide are being asked to do the same. In doing this, everyone can help protect the University’s information system from an attack that could result in employee, student, and patient records being compromised and unretrievable.
For almost everyone, this means changing two passwords—your NetID and your Active Directory ID. How to change both of these passwords (for non-URMC faculty, staff, and students) is outlined here. Accessing this page requires a University network or VPN connection.
If you’ve updated both passwords since October 15 you may disregard this request. You will also need to remember to update the passwords you are using to sign into any applications that use these credentials on smartphones, tablets, and other computers.
We understand that changing passwords can be disruptive, especially right now, and we appreciate your attention to this. Your departmental IT managers are prepared to help you with this task—please first reach out to them for assistance. Webinars for this fall’s Multicultural Visitation Program: In an effort to promote the many offices, people, and programs that create and sustain a diverse, inclusive and accessible environment across AS&E, the Office of Undergraduate Admissions is hosting a series of webinars throughout November. For Faculty and StaffBlackboard maintenance planned: Blackboard will be temporarily unavailable between Thursday, December 24, at 12:01 a.m. through Thursday, December 31, at midnight as system maintenance occurs. Access to courses, organizations, and related Blackboard services (Panopto, Voicethread, Yellowdig, etc.) will be offline during this outage. Prepare for this by planning your Blackboard tasks accordingly.
Course shells for spring 2021 will be created in Blackboard soon. If you wish to discuss ideas regarding the design of your spring course for online delivery, please feel free to contact the Blackboard team (email UnivITHelp@rochester.edu) and request an instructional design consultation for Blackboard.
Greene Center seeks faculty insights: The Greene Center is looking to partner with faculty to help students recognize and articulate the value of their academic experience. Deadline and single application portal for course development grants: AS&E offers several grants to help faculty develop or significantly revise courses, including the Teaching Innovation Grant, the Community-Engaged Course Development Grant, and the Humanities For Life Grant. To streamline the proposal, evaluation, selection, and funding process, the University has moved to a common proposal cycle for all course development grant programs in AS&E. Proposals for projects to be implemented during the 2021–22 academic year are due Friday, November 15. Learn more about each grant opportunity and submit a proposal through the funding portal.
Community-Engaged Course Operation Grants request for proposals: The Rochester Center for Community Leadership is accepting proposals for its Course Operation Grants for faculty who plan to offer courses in the spring semester that combine academic learning and community engagement opportunities for undergraduate students in AS&E. Proposals are due December 1. Email andrew.thomas@rocheester.edu with questions.
How to lead or organize a faculty-led program abroad: Have you ever considered coordinating a course abroad but did not know how to begin? The Center for Education Abroad will be hosting a webinar from noon to 1 p.m. Friday, November 20, for AS&E faculty interested in leading or organizing a program abroad. Faculty-led programs are an innovative way to engage with your students, diversify your curriculum, and contribute to the globalization efforts at the University of Rochester. From short-term summer to semester-long programs, these global experiences will be coordinated and supported by the Center for Education Abroad. Register here.
For StaffNominate a colleague for an ACE Award: The University community is invited to nominate AS&E staff members who exemplify the University’s vision and values. Staff can be nominated more than once, and winners will be chosen on the first of each month by Dean Donald Hall.
Fostering an Antiracist Campus—Opening the Door/ Foundations Workshop for Staff: In this workshop, we will discuss the language of race and racism, the origins of race, the history of race here at the University, and the position of our self in society. Participants will review contemporary language, and gain an understanding of its importance as part of the struggle for equity and when discussing race and racism. Participants will also leave with an overview of power dynamics as interwoven with the history of race and racism in the US and on campus. Finally, participants will develop a growing sense of how who we are as people—our identities—impact how we interact with each other.
