Announcements

Encouraging academic honesty in your courses this semester. With the semester about to begin, we encourage AS&E faculty and staff to make note of these academic honesty supports

  1. Our guides to fostering honesty and supporting students in online teaching environments (see the instructors’ resource page of the honesty website)
  2. Our policies and best practices document for using Zoom to proctor online tests
  3. Examples of Blackboard instructions and honor pledges that further define unauthorized collaboration and materials (*note: where listed, please check with authors regarding permission to adapt to other contexts and courses).

In particular, AS&E faculty and staff should note that the Dean’s Office has deliberated and made the considered decision not to sponsor vendor-provided alternatives to Zoom (such as ProctorU, Proctorio, Respondus, or similar) during the upcoming Spring 2021 term.

Send questions, comments, concerns about teaching to support academic honesty to Greer Murphy, academic honesty liaison, at honestyliaison@ur.rochester.edu. Send questions, concerns about reporting cases of suspected dishonesty either to Greer or to  Elaine Sia, chair of the board on academic honesty, at college.honesty@ur.rochester.edu.

Fostering an Antiracist Campus—Opening the Door/ Foundations Workshop for Staff: This workshop will cover the language of race and racism, the origins of race, the history of race here at the University, and the position of self in society. Participants will review contemporary language and gain an understanding of its importance as part of the struggle for equity and when discussing race and racism. Participants will also leave with an overview of power dynamics as interwoven with the history of race and racism in the US and on campus. Finally, participants will develop a growing sense of how who we are as people—our identities—impact how we interact with each other. Register for the next session, from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, January 22.

Networking groups for staff:  The AS&E Deans’ Office will soon offer several networking groups related to common job functions. The intent of the groups will be to share best practices, policy changes, and discuss areas of difficulties and successes in the role. Most groups will meet monthly.  Learn more.
