Guzman-Rea promoted to assistant dean for diversity in AS&E: Jessica Guzman-Rea has been named assistant dean for diversity in AS&E, effective August 1. she continues in her role as director of the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center. This promotion acknowledges the need for additional human resources focused on AS&E’s diversity, equity, and inclusion priorities, and recognizes the incredible value Guzman-Rea has added to AS&E through antiracism training and her many other efforts. She will work closely with Beth Olivares, dean for diversity, focusing on school-wide equity, inclusion, and diversity efforts. Concurrently, the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center is moving from its previous dual home in the Kearns Center and the Office of the Dean of Students to a center reporting directly to the Dean of the College.
Sloan Performing Arts Center update: Construction of the Sloan Performing Arts Center building—which was slowed by COVID-19, material delays, and hiring freezes—will soon be complete. But there is still some work to be done before the space can fully open. Throughout the late summer and early fall, new technology will be installed and tested, and then training must occur for the key stakeholders. The prop shop, costumes, scene shop, and other areas can move in after that. Additional training with new technologies, understanding set-up and take-down needs, and other activities will follow, ensuring the building will function well to meet the needs of our community. Tours are expected to be offered in October during Meliora 2021.
Small teaching strategies group: Anyone teaching a 2021 fall semester course is invited to join a teaching group to explore small, easy-to-implement, evidence-based classroom activities that can be dropped into ongoing courses. The group will meet six times to read James Lang’s Small Teaching (provided), and each participant will try out one of the teaching strategies once and report back to the group on how it worked out. If interested, contact Rachel Remmel, who will schedule the group around participants shortly before the semester starts.
Global Experience restart: The Center for Education Abroad is excited to begin the gradual restart of global experiences for students. This includes formal study programs, exchange programs, internships, conferences, research, fellowships, service learning, volunteer programs, performances, athletic competitions, and additional types of international experiences.
