Announcements

Coffee/tea virtual discussion on education abroad programs: Join Ted Pagano, associate director at the Center for Education Abroad, for an informal discussion on faculty or staff-led or organized programs abroad. A brief overview, discussions of future collaboration, and idea-sharing will be part of this virtual coffee and tea time, taking place Thursday, November 18, from 9 to 10 a.m. EST. This session is open to AS&E faculty. Enrollment is limited, and registration is required.

Large courses discussion group: Instructors of courses with 75 or more students are invited to join a 2022 spring semester teaching discussion group to share ideas and experiences. Participants will determine the group’s focus; past topics have ranged from grading and communication logistics to classroom techniques and engagement. The group will be organized and supported by the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning.  If interested, contact Rachel Remmel.

New session added for ‘Creating a Queer-Inclusive AS&E’ workshop: Due to high interest in this virtual workshop series, a second staff option is being offered on December 1 and 8 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. EST. Registration is required.

In part one, participants will learn basic information about LGBTQ culture including current language and terms, which will allow participants to immediately begin the journey of creating more inclusive spaces in their work.

In part two, participants will begin to gain an understanding of cissexism and heterosexism in higher education. They will then explore how these themes manifest in their work and grapple with strategies to shift these norms on an individual and school-wide level. Participation in part one is required. If you previously participated in part one in person, register to receive the link.

Support Services

UR Connected peer coaching: If you’re working with a student who is feeling stressed or overwhelmed, is having trouble sleeping, or is homesick, refer them to the UR Connected peer coaching program. The team of undergraduate and graduate coaches has received specialized training in areas such as active listening, helping students in distress, and suicide prevention. They are also educated on all of the resources our campus has to offer—from academic support to navigating an off-campus therapy appointment to finding a program to improve sleep habits. Refer students to Rochester.edu/urconnected, where they can review coach profiles and schedule directly with them online. If you’d like UR Connected referral cards to hand out to the students you work with, contact Amy McDonald at amcdonald@uhs.rochester.edu with the quantity.

Request workshops or meditation sessions for your organization: Did you know that the Mindful University Project offers educational workshops, training, and meditation sessions for student groups, departments, and even guest lectures?

Check the Mindful University Project website for a list of programs, including Mindful 101, Self-Compassion Breaks, Educator Self-Care and Self-Compassion, 10–15 minute meditations to begin/end your meetings, guest lectures, four-week learn-to-meditate classes, and more. Contact Rebecca Block if there is an additional topic that your group would like to explore.
