Student Ambassadors Sought for Multicultural Visitation Program: The Office of Admissions is looking for overnight Multicultural Visitation Program (MVP) ambassadors to host prospective students, November 10–11. MVP ambassadors have the important role of sharing their dorm room space as overnight hosts to guests who are eager to meet current students. Rochester students interested in this opportunity can learn more at an optional information session on Wednesday, October 12, at 5 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400. International Education Week (IEW): This annual initiative of the US Department of State and Department of Education promotes international engagement at US colleges and universities and will be held across the US from November 14 to 18. The University will be hosting multiple events across all campuses.
Grants are available for IEW events: The Office for Global Engagement IEW Grant funds programming during the month of November that celebrates the benefits of international education. This includes lectures and programs that highlight international academic programs and research, in addition to those that encourage the integration of our domestic and international student body. This grant is open to students and departments university-wide. Grants up to $500 will be awarded. The deadline to apply is October 14. Find more information and apply here.
Center for Education Abroad Fall Highlights: On Wednesday, September 21, the Center for Education Abroad hosted the annual Global Fair. One hundred and seventy-five students stopped by to see representatives from over 10 different countries from around the world.
Applications for going abroad in Spring 2023 have closed; however, the deadline for the Arezzo Lisio Italian Program is open until October 15. Find more details here.

Coffee Hour with the Dean: Dean Joan Saab will be hosting a coffee hour each month to speak with faculty and staff in AS&E. On Wednesday, November 9, she invites staff to drop by the 317 Lattimore Conference Room from 10 to 11 am. In December, she will host faculty and the date will be shared in the next newsletter.
Faculty Course Development Grants Available: Consider applying for one of AS&E’s course development grants that support instructors in the development of AS&E courses. Faculty interested in applying for the Teaching Innovation Grant (Teaching Center) or the Community-Engaged Course Development Grant (Center for Community Engagement) should submit a proposal by November 15. Join the Faculty Accessibility Ambassador Project: The Office of Disability Resources is looking for faculty members to join its “Faculty Accessibility Ambassador Project.” The office is now recruiting 24 faculty members from across University colleges and departments who are interested in receiving training to become our first cohort of “Accessibility Ambassadors.” Disability Resources will provide year-long support and training specifically related to disability issues, facilitating accommodations, creating accessible materials, and implementing Universal Design for Learning strategies in their classrooms. This exciting opportunity for faculty training is being made possible by funding from the NY State Education Department Enhancing Supports and Services for Students with Disabilities Grant for Postsecondary Success (SWDPS). Staff to Speak on Sorority and Fraternity Experiences: Jessica Guzman-Rea, assistant dean for diversity in AS&E and director of the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, and Casey Dowling, assistant director of Fraternity and Sorority Affairs, have co-written a chapter for the upcoming co-edited text, Student Identity and Learning in Sororities and Fraternities by Patrick Biddix, Monica Lee Miranda, and Pietro Sasso that will appear in the “Identity and Practice in Higher Education-Student Affairs Series” in 2023.
Ahead of the publication, Guzman-Rea and Dowling will be participating in a panel discussion titled “Amplifying Voice, Advancing Belonging, and Affirming Identity in Sororities and Fraternities” at this year’s Association of Fraternity and Sorority Advisors Conference in Maryland. Presenters will attempt to foreground how the fraternity/sorority experience explicitly contributes to areas of student development across multiple identities including race, ethnicity culture, gender identity, social class, and ability.
Nominate a Colleague for an ACE Award: The University community is invited to nominate AS&E staff members who exemplify the University’s vision and values and go above and beyond their job to make AS&E and the University ever better. Successful nominations will highlight specific examples of tasks, projects, or activities where staff are exceeding their core functions. Staff can be nominated more than once, and winners will be chosen on the first of each month by Interim Dean of the Faculty Joan Saab.
