IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Axel Kairies

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, August 19, for Axel Kairies, an administrative assistant in the blood bank, clinical laboratory services at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on July 20. Kairies joined the University staff in 1974.


ROCHESTER RESEARCH

Researchers trace a source of poor tendon healing, retrain cells for better recovery

Rochester researchers, for the first time, have traced and manipulated a key player in the healing process of injured tendons: the epitenon cells that form a thin outer layer surrounding the tendon. Their discovery may pave the way to new translational treatments. Explore the research here.

Financial Health Bites webinar for those considering homeownership

The Office of Total Rewards hosts a webinar on Wednesday, August 20, at noon to discuss the steps you need to take to achieve home ownership. Topics include information on loan options and repayment processes, as well as how to review the costs and responsibilities associated with homeownership. This webinar will be conducted by a representative from KeyBank. Register in advance to attend.

New and early career instructor teaching community

Learn to implement evidence-based teaching practices and document your teaching effectiveness. The program will meet six times in person on the River Campus during the fall semester and again in the spring semester. Meeting days and times will be scheduled based on participant availability. This Teaching Center program is open to instructors in their first three years of teaching at the University who are on multi-year contracts, such as tenure track, instructional track, clinical track, lecturer, and two-year visiting assistant professor. Register here.

Lunch session on living in gratitude

The next session of the Department of Psychiatry’s 2025 summer brown bag series features a discussion with Diane Schenandoah, artist and Wolf Clan Faithkeeper of the Oneida Nation, on living in gratitude and responsibilities to the natural world. Register to attend in person in the Helen Wood Hall Auditorium (1W-304) or virtually via Zoom on Wednesday, August 13, at noon. CEUs and CMEs are available.

Outdoor soccer league

On TikTok, warnings spread about the herbal tonic ‘Feel Free’

NBC News, August 10

It’s the kratom—a plant native to Southeast Asia known for its stimulant and opioid-like effects—in Feel Free that has experts and health officials concerned. Marc Swogger, an associate professor of psychiatry and of medicine, said kratom tends not to be addictive when taken in low doses, but that people may develop a tolerance and need to take more to feel the same effects. When people stop taking kratom, some may experience withdrawal.
