Temporary relocation of Medical Center post office, corridor closure
The post office located at G.5142 in the Medical Center is now under construction, with the new Mail and Copy Services Center re-opening set for March 31. The temporary location of the post office is G.7230A and may be accessed by corridors G.6100 and G.6300. All post office operations will continue at this interim location with no interruption to service. Hours will remain Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. For questions, call 585-275-5208 or email cmps@ur.rochester.edu.
To allow a safe environment for contractors and staff, portions of the G.5100 corridor will be closed. All non-post office areas in G.5100 will be accessible via the detours posted. The G.5150 and G.5152 elevators, G.5133, and the time clock located by door G.5142 will remain in use. To access the Medical Center, Golisano Children’s Hospital, ACF, and Wilmot Cancer Center from the west side of the facility, use corridor G.6100. Wayfinding maps are posted to help direct you to your destination.
Weather station horn test scheduled for Thursday
The University’s new weather station horn will be tested on Thursday, August 14, at 3 p.m. Located on River Campus on the Towers Athletic Field in the Brian F. Prince Athletic Complex, the weather station’s horn will sound twice on Thursday: for 10 seconds to test the lightning alarm, and then for 30 seconds to test the tornado alarm. Faculty, students, staff, and visitors do not need to take any action as part of the test. Find more information on the new weather station.
University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, September 18, for University Trustee Emeritus Mark Ain ’67S (MBA), who died July 25. The founder of Kronos, Inc., Ain’s passion for entrepreneurship inspired the creation of the Ain Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, which gives aspiring entrepreneurs the tools, mentorship, and space to experiment, take risks, and turn ideas into real ventures. His legacy also continues to endure through the Mark Ain Business Model Competition, an annual event that has become a cornerstone of the student startup ecosystem at Rochester.
AI-driven, instructor-free platform could transform surgical training
To overcome challenges in the “see one, do one, teach one” training model, Medical Center researchers have developed an autonomous educational system that pairs realistic, 3D‑printed organs with an augmented‑reality headset and artificial intelligence to create a closed-loop training environment. University postdoctoral associates and fellows from all areas and in any discipline are encouraged to apply to present their work during National Postdoc Appreciation Week on September 15. Finalists will be selected to give a four-minute oral presentation to a panel of judges and compete for multiple monetary prizes as part of the Steadman Family Postdoctoral Associate Prize. More than 1,200 new undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, as well as their families, will arrive on the River Campus on Monday, August 18, and Tuesday, August 19. Following move-in and check-in, more than 100 Welcome Week events and activities will take place from Monday, August 18, through Saturday, August 23, planned by the Office of Orientation and New Student Programs. These events include the undergraduate Convocation ceremony on Wednesday, August 20, at 9:30 a.m. on the Eastman Quad. Faculty Senate opening meeting and welcome reception
The Office of the Faculty Senate invites faculty to attend the Faculty Senate opening meeting and welcome reception to mark the beginning of the 2025–26 academic year on Tuesday, August 26, in the Hawkins Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. The meeting takes place from 4 to 6 p.m., with the reception to follow. Generative artificial intelligence teaching group
Join other instructors to discuss the implications of generative AI for teaching and learning. Participants will consider how to revise courses in response to generative AI and explore whether and how to integrate it into student or instructor work. Appropriate for both those who have never used generative AI and those who have used it extensively, this Teaching Center group will meet six times during the fall semester in person on River Campus and will be scheduled by polling participants. On Wednesday, August 20, from noon to 1 p.m., Joe Testani, the deputy to the president, will host a webinar featuring Tom Farrell ’88, ’90W (MS), the senior vice president for University advancement. Farrell will discuss the impending launch of “For Ever Better: The Campaign for the University of Rochester” and how it will support Boundless Possibility, the University’s 2030 strategic plan, address the challenges of the moment, and help shape the University’s future.
An evolution of the strategic plan’s Strat Chats, Farrell’s conversation is the first installment in a new webinar series in which University leaders share their perspectives and insights on institutional priorities, the state of higher education and healthcare, navigating challenges and issues, and other broad-scale topics. ‘Got Health’ talk on accessing primary care
Kevin Fiscella, a professor of family medicine and codirector of Family Medicine Research, will present at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 26, at the Maplewood Family YMCA, 25 Driving Park Avenue,on the importance of receiving regular primary care and resources for accessing services. The talk is part of the “Got Health” series provided in partnership with the Center for Community Health & Prevention, the Health Equity Program Support Office, and the YMCA of Greater Rochester.
