Researchers continue to confront major hurdles in quantum computing

With new insights on the problem of noise in quantum computing, Rochester researchers including John Nichol, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, make major strides in improving the transfer of information in quantum systems.

Update on new positive cases of COVID-19

There are 14 new positive cases among students to report: one on the Eastman Campus, three on the Medical Campus, 10 on the River Campus. Please note that the University’s COVID-19 Dashboard is updated when a new case is reported. Find the latest COVID-19 messages and updates here.

Search underway for executive vice president for administration and finance and CFO

A committee has been assembled to help with the search for the University’s executive vice president for administration and finance and chief financial officer (EVP). The critical role reports directly to the president and provides strategic leadership for finance and administrative operations.

Flags will be lowered for Lonnie Keys Jr.

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered Thursday, March 31, for Lonnie Keys Jr., a call center financial counselor in Patient Self-Pay Services, who died on March 13. Keys joined the University staff in 2019.

Apply to the Sustainability Community-Engaged Fellowship

The 2022 Sustainability Community-Engaged Fellowship program seeks four Rochester undergraduate students for paid employment in a summer research project, June 20 through August 12. Interns will design science curriculum and performance arts workshops for youth in Sodus, New York, and study the recent countrywide ban on the pesticide chlorpyrifos, as well as other key farming issues, such as pollinators, invasive species, soil quality, and youth farmworker health. PAWS for Stress Relief at Eastman

Managing stress is a key ingredient for improving concentration and decreasing performance anxiety. Relax with some therapy dogs at the Health Promotion Office’s PAWS for Stress Relief event on Thursday, March 31, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. in the Eastman School of Music Student Living Center. This event is open to the entire Eastman community.

Webinar on biopsychosocial innovations in care

Join the Department of Psychiatry for its next 75th anniversary webinar on Tuesday, March 29, from 6:15 to 7 p.m. EDT. Speakers will present five-minute lightning rounds on topics such as creating unique spaces such as Lazos Fuertes, deaf wellness and integrated primary care in psychiatry, integrating mental health care with medical care, mental health care throughout the lifespan, community approaches to care for serious mental illness, and innovations in psychiatric nursing. Eastman Opera Theatre presents ‘Into the Woods’

Eastman Opera Theatre continues its season with Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods, April 7–10 in Kodak Hall, Eastman School of Music. Tickets for this production are $20 for the general public, free to University ID holders, and can be purchased at the Eastman Theatre Box Office, 433 East Main St., or online.

Fairbank Lecture with Holocaust survivor Manny Gurowski

Holocaust survivor Manny Gurowski will share his experiences as a young Jewish boy in Germany at the Fairbank Lecture on Tuesday, April 12, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Interfaith Chapel, River Campus. Attendees at this in-person event will learn how he helped save the lives of others at the Nazi-controlled labor camp where he worked in a soap factory at the age of eight. Register here to attend.

Join a workout challenge at the URMC Fitness Center

Get ready for warmer weather with this 21-day challenge. Participants pay $10 for the program and use of the URMC Fitness Center and will receive points for exercise and, optionally, weight loss.
