Annual MLK commemorative event will feature conversation on social justice, politics, and religion
The University’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Address will take place on Friday, January 20, in Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons, and via Zoom from 6 to 7:30 p.m. EST. This year’s event takes on a new format: a discussion of King’s civil rights movement, then and now, between Anthea Butler (left), chair of religious studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and Valeria Sinclair-Chapman (right), a professor of political science at Purdue University, moderated by Jeffrey McCune, director of the Frederick Douglass Institute for African and African-American Studies. Registration is required to attend in person or virtually.

Innovative partnership creates urban teaching residency program
A new partnership between the Warner School of Education, Nazareth College, and the Rochester City School District will bring a first-of-its-kind urban teaching fellowship program to Rochester. Based on a teacher residency model, the ROC Urban Teaching Fellows Program will ease the teacher shortage in Rochester while giving future educators hands-on classroom experience, mentorship, and employment.
Study sheds light on the counseling needs of LGBTQ+ clients facing religious challenges
New research from Maureen Sharp, a PhD student at the Warner School of Education, and colleagues from Montclair State University and Nova Southeastern University studies the critical aspects that shape the identity development process for sexual or affectional minorities who identify as religious and spiritual.
“There were a lot of people who didn’t think it was possible, but I and others who kept the faith feel somewhat vindicated,” says Michael Campbell, former director of the Laboratory for Laser Energetics and an early proponent of the National Ignition Facility while at Lawrence Livermore lab.
Undergraduates can take a break from studying and creating final projects to refuel with a free meal. Enjoy breakfast foods such as eggs, bacon, and waffles starting at 9 p.m. in the Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons. The breakfast is sponsored by Wilson Commons Student Activities, the Gwen M. Greene Center for Career Education and Connections, and University IT.
River Campus faculty and staff are invited to celebrate the holiday season at the River Campus holiday social today, December 16, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Feldman Ballroom, Douglass Commons.

The University is now partnering with a new travel insurance provider and offers a reminder to faculty and staff of the important international travel and security resources available through the Office for Global Engagement.
