Jiarui Chen ’23 and Olivia Waysack ’22 are the University’s undergraduate and graduate Student Employees of the Year. The award is sponsored by the National Student Employment Association. Chen, a data science major who works as a research assistant at the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, has also been named the 2023 Student Employee of the Year for Technology and Innovation. Waysack, an epidemiology master’s student, is a research assistant for ROC HOME, a community-based home-visiting research project in the Department of Environmental Medicine.
The spring eyeglasses collection program held by University Facilities and Services set a new record this year by collecting 1,434 pairs of glasses. Since the program began in August 2014, a total of 11,636 pairs of glasses have been collected. Read more in this week’s Go Green blog post.
Virtual panel: ‘The Israeli Judiciary and the Future of Israeli Democracy’
Hundreds of thousands of Israelis have participated in protests opposing a proposed overhaul of the Israeli judicial system. With the Knesset back in session, will Benjamin Netanyahu’s government attempt to enact those changes? Join the University’s Democracy Center and its panel of experts at 6 p.m. today, May 10, to learn how the judicial overhaul, if enacted, would alter the functioning of Israeli political institutions, and how the contest over judicial independence in Israel compares to other challenges to democracy around the world. The panel features Tom Ginsburg, a professor of international law and political science at the University of Chicago; Guy Grossman, a professor of political science at the University of Pennsylvania; and Gretchen Helmke, a professor of political science at Rochester. “The Aesthetics of Kindness: An Artist Talk and Workshop” with interdisciplinary artist Heather Layton, an associate professor in the Department of Art and Art History, in the next installment of the “Changing Perspectives Through the Arts” series, a collaboration of the Department of Health Humanities and Bioethics, Eastman Performing Arts Medicine, and Rochester community organizations.
