New tools will help study quantum chemistry aboard the International Space Station
At NASA’s Cold Atom Lab facility aboard the International Space Station, an international team of scientists produced a quantum gas containing two types of atoms for the first time in space. Nicholas Bigelow, the Lee A. DuBridge Professor of Physics and a professor of optics at Rochester, says these quantum tools can be used to enhance the study of the essence of quantum matter, aid in the navigation between planets, as well as to help solve mysteries of the universe, and deepen our understanding of the fundamental laws of nature.

International Education Week featured speaker: Andrea Campos
Register to attend a talk with this year’s International Education Week featured speaker, Andrea Campos, a Mexican-American, New York Times bestselling illustrator, designer, and creative storyteller. The talk takes place today, November 16, at 6 p.m. In addition to the presentation, there will be a raffle for some of Campos’s design products from Target as well as a chance to have dinner with her at GRAPPA after the presentation; you must be in attendance to win. Only University students are eligible for the GRAPPA dinner giveaway; other raffle prizes are open to all attendees.
One Language, One Recipe: Japanese
Join the Language Center for a cooking demonstration in Japanese on Friday, November 17, at noon in the Community Kitchen, Douglass Commons. Shizuka Hardy, an associate professor of instruction in Japanese, and Yuki Taguchi, an assistant professor of instruction in Japanese, will be preparing miso soup and Japanese rice balls.
Carillon composition award
The Arthur Satz Department of Music is accepting new arrangements or compositions that are original, musical, and accessible for playing on the Hopeman Carillon for the Rochester Carillon Composition Competition Award. Submissions will be accepted through January 30 and are welcomed from any University student or alumni. Submissions will be judged competitively, with prizes of $500 for the winner and $400 for the runner-up.
