Comparing gene sequences across species to understand aging and dementia

A new collaboration led by Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor of Biology and codirector of the Rochester Aging Research Center, and M. Kerry O’Banion, a professor of neuroscience and of neurology, examines gene mechanisms responsible for long life, drawing on the latest findings to pursue novel interventions for the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias.

Committee formed for senior vice provost search

In a recent message to the University community, Interim Provost Nicole Sampson announced organizational and leadership changes to better support the implementation of the Boundless Possibility strategic plan. Among the announced changes is the creation of the new senior vice provost for academic excellence position that will support and oversee a multidisciplinary approach to student education and academic success. John Blackshear, vice president for university student life, and Kate Sheeran, the Joan and Martin Messinger Dean of the Eastman School of Music, will cochair the search committee. Voter registration deadline is October 26

A reminder that the New York State voter registration deadline is October 26. If you have already registered, you can double-check your registration to ensure all your information is up to date through the TurboVote portal. Find full voting information, including details on requesting a mail-in ballot, nearby early-voting locations, and University post-election events.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Ellen Schuyler

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, October 29, for Ellen Schuyler, a registered nurse 2 at the Center for Perioperative Medicine, who died on September 20. Schuyler joined the University staff in 1979.

Women and Diversity in Industry event today

Women and Minorities in Computing (WiC-MiC) and the Greene Center are hosting a moderated discussion and open Q&A with Wells Fargo executive, Sukhi Sahni, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today, October 22, in Morey Hall, Room 321. WiC-MiC President Rhea Bharadwaj ’24 will moderate the fireside chat, after which the floor will be open to questions from the audience. Learn more and register on Handshake to save your spot.

UR Thinkers at RMSC After Dark

Join UR Thinkers at RMSC After Dark: Monster Bash—a night where science meets spookiness at the Rochester Museum and Science Center. The Halloween-themed event will bring classic movie monsters to life and is the perfect place to pitch your research. The event is for adults 21 and over; IDs will be required at the door. Participate in research sharing from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; UR Thinkers swag will be raffled off at 8:30 p.m. A limited number of free tickets are available. Workshop on supporting students for effective group work

Open to all University instructors, this one-hour Teaching Center Zoom workshop is designed to help instructors support the development and growth of student teams for efficient and effective group work. Learn how to scaffold group learning experiences that enable students to develop the interpersonal skills necessary to work successfully as teams. Register here to attend on Thursday, October 24, from 11 a.m. to noon.

Updating your retirement account beneficiaries

Make sure your beneficiary information reflects your current wishes, as retirement plan assets are transferred according to the terms of your plan’s beneficiary designation, rather than by the terms of your will. Go to TIAA.org/Rochester and click “Enroll” or “Update.” Once you log in or register, click on the profile button at the top of the page and select “Manage beneficiaries.”

Hosted and cosponsored by ROCTalks, the Committee for Political Engagement, UR Democrats, and UR Republicans, a policy debate on Wednesday, October 23, provides a platform for students to express their views, challenge opposing perspectives, and engage with the core issues shaping the political landscape. Participants needed for a research study on cognitive control

Individuals ages 60 to 80 with memory complaints or problems are needed to participate in a research study on cognitive control. The study involves a phone screening, and, if qualified, an in-person meeting and two 90-minute MRI sessions on separate visits at the University’s Center for Advanced Brain Imaging and Neurophysiology. Participants will perform computer-based cognitive tasks while inside the MRI machine. Compensation is up to $160 and a picture of the participant’s brain upon request.
