Writing 105: The class you need—and want—to take at Rochester

Only one course is required as part of the Rochester Curriculum: Writing 105: Reasoning and Writing, which teaches students fundamental and essential writing skills. Here’s what you need to know about the course from instructors, students, and alumni.

James Purvis named associate vice president and chief information security officer

James Purvis has been named the University’s associate vice president and chief information security officer following a national search. Purvis most recently served as director of governance, risk, and compliance, and clinical and administrative information security officer at Rochester.

HallowGreene Party

Join the Greene Center for this year’s HallowGreene Party. Stop by Dewey Hall, Room 4-200, on Thursday, October 31, between 2 and 4 p.m. to trick-or-treat around the office, grab festive treats, play a game or two with your peers, and decorate a pumpkin cookie. RSVP here.

Beaded bracelets and support resources

Bead bracelets with Academic Honesty, CARE, and the All Campus Judicial Council in Hirst Lounge, Wilson Commons, on Friday, November 1, from 2 to 5 p.m. Beads, coloring pages, and snacks will be provided, along with the opportunity to learn more about support resources while sharing (and beading) words that motivate you in your studies and are important to the shared community.

Workshop on evaluating group work equitably

Open to all University instructors, this one-hour Teaching Center Zoom workshop is designed to help instructors fairly and efficiently translate group performance into individual grades. Learn principles for effectively evaluating the process and product of group assignments and projects. Register here to attend on Friday, November 1, from noon to 1 p.m.

NSF I-Corps regional course for optics or photonics researchers

University-based STEM researchers working on optics or photonics technologies are invited to evaluate the market potential of their technology innovation, gain a deeper understanding of your industry, and learn professional skills in a free, monthlong NSF I-Corps regional course. The course begins online and culminates with a trip to San Francisco for SPIE Photonics West. Up to $5,000 (depending on team size) in travel reimbursement funding will be available for accepted teams. Learn more and apply by November 20.

Health Equity in Progress sessions

The Center for Community Health & Prevention’s Office of Health Equity Research and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute are joining forces to introduce a Health Equity in Progress segment to ongoing Population Health Coordinating Committee meetings. Members of health equity research networks and the rest of the University community are invited to participate in updates on research being conducted to address health inequities throughout the region, as well as offer opportunities to identify potential collaborators and facilitate greater partnership. Each segment will include a presentation from a member of the Health Equity Research Core Investigators who is developing or implementing a project that addresses one of the community-identified priority areas for research.

The first Health Equity in Progress segment on November 7 will feature a discussion on increasing access to care for children and adults with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders with Christie Petrenko, a research associate professor of psychology and an associate professor of pediatrics.

Memorial service for Paul Griner, former CEO of Strong Memorial Hosptial

Join University leaders, alumni, friends, faculty, staff, and family for a memorial service on Saturday, November 16, at 10:30 a.m. in the School of Nursing Auditorium to celebrate the life of Paul Griner, emeritus professor of medicine at the School of Medicine and Dentistry and former chief executive officer for Strong Memorial Hospital. The service will be followed by a lunch reception in Evarts Lounge. RSVP online by November 9. Email Lisa Shepard with questions.

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers held its annual pumpkin launch last week on Wilson Quad. Together with peers from RIT and Monroe Community College, Rochester students tested their own catapults, trebuchets, and pressurized cannon launchers.
