The enduring legacy of NROTC at Rochester

The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program prepares students to become officers in the US Navy or Marine Corps through a blend of academic study, physical training, and leadership development. Meet a few of Rochester’s NROTC students and alumni.

In observation of Veterans Day, the University is honoring faculty, staff, and students who have served in the US Armed Forces at a ceremony this morning. Members of the University community can also participate in-person or virtually in the Veterans Day 5K run on Tuesday, November 12.

Be aware of ’shoulder surfers’

Are you being mindful when sharing sensitive information over the phone? Information Security reminds you of the importance of being aware of your surroundings and conscious of “shoulder surfers.” These malicious bystanders often take advantage of public places and keep their ears open for those discussing high- or medium-risk data and an eye out for individuals entering information on computers. Putting sensitive information in the wrong hands can be detrimental to protecting your identity or the workplace.

Sleep and self-care event

Join the UHS Health Promotion Office from noon to 2 p.m. today, November 11, for a sleep and self-care event in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees Library. Learn about healthy sleep habits and incorporating yoga nidra into your life to lower stress and improve well-being. There will be prizes, as well as tea and a yoga practice.

Get the help you need with tutoring

Meet with Learning Center staff on Tuesday, November 12, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in Hirst Lounge, Wilson Commons, to get set up with a tutor. Whether it’s that tricky concept or just needing some extra support, peer tutors are ready to work with you to achieve your academic goals. Stop by or visit the Learning Center website and take the next step towards stronger grades and more confidence.

‘Bright Futures for Humanities Majors’ lecture

All current undergraduate and graduate humanities students are invited to attend the inaugural lecture in the Samuels Family Speaker Series, “Bright Futures for Humanities Majors.” The talk takes place on Friday, November 15, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Humanities Center, Conference Room D. A reception will follow in the Humanities Lounge. Register in advance here.

Alumni Connections with University Athletics

“Alumni Connections” is a series highlighting successful alumni from various athletic backgrounds who share their career journeys. Join a virtual discussion on Tuesday, November 12, at noon with Karen Durkin ’87, a basketball and swimming alumna with a lifelong love of sports.

Gear up for winter biking

Interested in biking during the winter months? Join the winter biking class to learn about essential equipment for riding in snow and rain. The 15-minute online session will take place on Wednesday, November 13, from noon to 12:15 p.m. via Zoom. Registration is required. This is the last session in a monthly series presented by the Department of Transportation and Logistics.

Post-election results panel

David Primo, the Ani and Mark Gabrellian Professor and a professor of political science and business administration, and a panel of top policy experts break down what the election results could mean for your future. Attend on Wednesday, November 13, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in Wegmans Hall, Room 1400.

America Recycles Day landfill tour

University students, faculty, and staff can take a guided bus tour of Waste Management’s High Acres Landfill on Friday, November 15, from 10 a.m. to noon. The local facility features a methane gas renewable energy plant that produces enough energy to power 9,000 homes. Email Philip Piedmont to secure your spot.

Bernard Guyer Lecture Series focuses on maternal and child health

Join the Center for Community Health & Prevention for the 14th annual Bernard Guyer, MD, Lecture Series, a special public health grand rounds, on November 19 at the Memorial Art Gallery. Dorcey Applyrs, Albany’s chief city auditor, will present “Are Black Women Safe Giving Birth: The Hard Truth of How Racism and Discrimination Perpetuate Disparities in Maternal Mortality” as the keynote address. New this year, the event will feature a performance from Pillsbury House Theatre’s interactive theater ensemble and a panel of area experts on maternal and child health. Register today.
