Using AI to advance child development and learning

From tools to help parents of deaf and hard-of-hearing children learn American Sign Language to interactive games that demystify machine learning, Zhen Bai, an assistant professor of computer science and the Biggar Family Fellow in Data Science at the Goergen Institute for Data Science, aims to help children benefit from artificial intelligence (AI) and understand how it is impacting them.

International student drop-in hours

Drop by the Greene Center in Dewey Hall, Room 4-200, today, November 15, between noon and 4 p.m. to meet with career advisors and peer career advisors for assistance related to resumes, cover letters, job and internship applications, and more. No appointment is necessary, and light snacks will be provided. The event is cosponsored by the International Students’ Association and the Student Organization for Caribbean Awareness.

Workshop on consent and boundaries

Join the UHS Health Promotion Office and Title IX office for a workshop on consent and boundary-setting and gain practical skills for platonic and romantic settings. Attend on Friday, November 22, from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Welles-Brown Room, Rush Rhees. Light refreshments will be provided.

Apply for the 2025 University Research Awards

The request for proposals and online application are now available for the 2025 University Research Awards, providing seed money to enable the development of new, innovative research projects with a high probability of attracting external support in the short term, and further stimulating the research of faculty who have moved beyond research support provided by the University as part of their initial start-up period. Find further information—including the potential for matching funds—here.

Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 31. Additional details on eligibility, the application and review processes, and post-award follow-up requirements are available on the Office of the Vice President for Research website.

Educational IT Innovation Grants

The Educational IT Committee, a part of the IT Governance structure, promotes the use of technologies to support instructional innovation throughout the University. By encouraging and supporting faculty and staff efforts in this area we hope to enhance learner experiences and outcomes. To support these aims, the Innovation Grant program is available through a proposal process to support faculty and staff in adopting new technologies in their teaching. This program will also include mentorship, support, and connection to existing resources in the institution through the committee. Find details on application submission here.

WUN workshop on addressing unhealthy hierarchies in research environments

Mahidol University and the University of York, partners in the World Universities Network, invite faculty members to participate in a virtual workshop aimed at promoting equitable and responsible research practices. This workshop is open to researchers at all stages of their careers, with a particular focus on providing support and guidance for early-career researchers. Register by November 17 to attend December 3–4.

The Program of Dance and Movement is looking for participants for “Watershed Movements,” a study to investigate the relationship among art, storytelling, the health of local rivers, and overall well-being. Wilmot Cancer Institute experts discuss insights on metastatic breast cancer

Alissa Huston, an associate professor of medicine, and Susan Dent, an interim professor of medicine, will discuss the latest insights into metastatic breast cancer during a session at the Memorial Art Gallery on Monday, November 18. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the session starts at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Register here.

Screening, discussion with director Lizzie Borden

Student groups On Film and Framed host director Lizzie Borden for a series of film screenings and the gallery opening of Sex/Labor. On Wednesday, November 20, in collaboration with the Little Theater and the High Falls Women in Film Series, Borden’s first two films, Regrouping and Born in Flames will be shown starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by a Q&A with Borden. On Thursday, November 21, attend a screening of Working Girls in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons, at 5:30 p.m., followed by the opening reception of Sex/Labor in the Harnett Gallery.
