Looking ahead to the spring semester

In a message shared yesterday with the University community, President Sarah Mangelsdorf looks ahead to the spring semester, highlighting milestone anniversaries in 2025 for the University, the Medical Center, the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and the School of Nursing; the continued progress of the Boundless Possibility strategic plan; and the start of the University’s first comprehensive, institutional marketing effort. “In all our interactions, we must model our values—the values that have enriched our 175-year history—as members of an open-minded, respectful, academic community that’s dedicated to serving the greater good.” Read the full message here.

Secure your Zoom events from unwanted participants or distractions

When hosting a Zoom meeting or event, you need to ensure your event settings are configured to prevent unwanted attendees or content from disrupting the meeting—especially webinar-style events. Review University IT’s Meeting Host Guide and learn how to manage participants using Zoom participant and meeting controls, such as meeting passcodes or waiting rooms, along with quick steps to remedy interruptions at the University’s Zoom service web page.

“The data is the data,” says Deborah Cory-Slechta, a professor of environmental medicine and of neuroscience. She says paraquat exposure is associated with the loss of dopamine neurons, which can cause slow and uncoordinated movements, tremors, and difficulty communicating, all of which are consistent with Parkinson’s disease.

“The evidence is very strong, both based on animal studies and on epidemiological evidence the fact that it kills dopamine neurons,” she said.

Winter Activities Fair

Undergraduate students: Are you interested in learning how to get involved on campus and pursue your passions? Attend the annual Winter Activities Fair on Friday, January 24, from 2 to 3:30 pm in the Zornow Courts inside the Goergen Athletic Center. This Rochester Tradition is a great way to explore opportunities to connect, engage, and take in informational displays from over 200 student organizations. Presented by Wilson Commons Student Activities.

Events for first-year undergraduate students

The School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Science are holding several events for first-year undergraduate students this semester.

  • First-Year Student Celebration: Monday, February 10, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library. Enjoy free food, raffle prizes, and Rochester swag. No need to RSVP.
  • Class of 2028 Feedback Sessions: Thursday, January 30, from 2 to 3 p.m.; Monday, February 3, from noon to 1 p.m.;  and Tuesday, February 11, from 5 to 6 p.m. in Wilson Commons, Room 121 (across from the Pit). Receive free food and a FYRE candy bar for attending. Learn more and RSVP here.

Drag Race star Thorgy Thor and the Thorcestra at Eastman Theatre

Free student tickets are available to see Thorgy Thor, a New York City-based drag performance artist and professional strings musician, at Kodak Hall in Eastman Theatre, on Thursday, February 13, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are free for students across all University schools, but are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Free shuttles are available from Rush Rhees Library to and from the event. Tickets and shuttles are provided by the Paul J. Burgett Intercultural Center, the Office of Equity and Inclusion, and the Office of Community Partnerships. Register here by Friday, February 7.

Undergraduate writing contest

The Writing, Speaking, and Argument Program’s annual Undergraduate Writing Contest provides an opportunity to recognize outstanding student writing. Monetary prizes will be given to the best submissions in five categories; prizes will also be given to the best multimodal compositions and projects. The contest is open to undergraduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering. 

You may submit up to one paper or project per category. Entries may be work for a course you are taking this semester or work you completed during a previous semester. Submissions are due by February 14 at 3 p.m. Further details about the contest can be found on the Writing Program’s website. Contact wsap@ur.rochester.edu with questions.

Pursue a career in medical physics with SMD program

Learn more about opportunities to use your technical expertise to advance patient care at an upcoming open house for the School of Medicine and Dentistry’s CAMPEP-accredited MS program in medical physics on Thursday, January 30, at 5:30 p.m. Trainees who graduate from the program will be prepared to pursue a career path toward becoming a clinical medical physicist. Attendees who register ahead of time will receive an application fee waiver for the program. Register in advance here.

Sit with the Buddhist meditation group

Join the Buddhist meditation group via Zoom for weekly sessions on Saturdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. starting on February 8. Each session includes two 30-minute drop-in sittings to fit tight schedules. Contact Kyle Trenshaw for more information or to be added to the email list. No prior meditation experience is necessary.

Opening reception for Face Value: The Uses of Portraiture in the Hartnett Gallery

In a two-part exhibition drawn from the private collection of Nigel Maister, director of the International Theater Program, Face Value: The Uses of Portraiture explores some of the many ways portraiture has developed and redefined itself over its 180-year history. Attend the opening reception today, January 23, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Hartnett Gallery.

The exhibit will feature in two locations this semester. Part I: Conversations, is on display at the Hartnett Gallery through February 22, and Part II: Identities, is on display at Frontispace in the Art and Music Library, Rush Rhees Library, through February 16.
