School of Nursing, RCSD Monroe Campus launch school-based health center
The School of Nursing and Rochester City School District (RCSD) opened a new school-based health center at James Monroe High School on February 28, marking a significant step to improve access to physical and mental health care for local high school students. This year also marks the School’s 30th anniversary of providing confidential, comprehensive care at no cost to RCSD students and families, having opened its first Center at East High School in 1995.
University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Tuesday, March 11, for Peter Veazie, a professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences, who died on February 14. Veazie joined the University faculty in 2004.
Any student who studied abroad during the year 2024 is eligible to submit for the Center for Education Abroad side of the Global Photo Contest, and any current international or exchange student is eligible for the International Service Office side of the contest. The deadline for submissions is Friday, March 7. Visit the Office of Global Engagement’s website to check out the new reimagined categories, details of the contest, and how to submit photos.
Deadline extended for Celebrating Research Week
Got research? Sign up to be a part of Celebrating Research Week in April. Event registrations are open to all undergraduate students who have conducted research in the last year; you may apply for all three opportunities. The deadline to apply for the Speakers Symposium and the Lightning Talks has been extended to Sunday, March 9. Send an email with questions.
Friday, April 4: The Speakers Symposium will consist of four sessions, each representing a distinct disciplinary section of the University.
Wednesday, April 9: For Lightning Talks, each of the 20 student presenters will be allowed a single slide and three minutes to present their research.
Friday, April 11: At the Undergraduate Research Exposition and Awards Ceremony, all students at all levels and in all areas of study are invited to present posters of their investigative and creative work. The deadline to apply for a poster presentation is Sunday, March 23.
Graduate Writing Project writing retreat
The Graduate Writing Project is hosting an in-person writing retreat March 10–14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Writing retreats are designed for graduate students in the School of Arts & Sciences and the Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences who are working on graduate-level writing such as dissertations, theses, proposals, and publications. This structured writing experience offers guidance, accountability, and community, as well as the option to work one-on-one with a writing consultant. Register online. A mind-body approach for chronic pain in college students
Designed for undergraduate and graduate students, this inaugural Mindful University Project explores evidence-based mind-body approaches, including pain reprocessing therapy, emotional awareness and expression therapy, and mindfulness techniques. This class will be held on April 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 2 to 3:15 p.m. via Zoom. The course is open to students who have experienced chronic pain for over three months, have been evaluated by a doctor, or have one or more of these conditions. Participants will gain practical tools to reduce pain, receive a free pain reprocessing therapy workbook, and access exclusive coaching. Register to reserve your spot.

The following Ash Wednesday events will take place on Wednesday, March 5.
Chaplaincy Services at Strong Memorial Hospital will offer a 30-minute Ash Wednesday service at 11:30 a.m. in the Interfaith Chapel at Strong Memorial Hospital (1-6215D) near the Employee Pharmacy. All are welcome. To request ashes, call Chaplaincy Services at (585) 275-2187.
The Catholic Newman Community will distribute ashes at the Interfaith Chapel from 8 to 9:30 a.m. and 3 to 6 p.m. Full mass will be held at 12:30 and 9 p.m. At the Eastman Student Living Center, ashes will be distributed from 10 to 11:30 a.m.; a word service takes place at 5 p.m.
Lecture, book signing on Ukraine’s political and military battleground
Attend a lecture and book signing with Adrian Karatnycky, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council. “Ukraine’s Political and Military Battleground: The Shaping of a Modern Nation” takes place Thursday, March 6, at 7:30 p.m. in Sloan Auditorium, Goergen Hall. Learn more about the event here.
Grand rounds webinar on supporting child development in Monroe County
“Meditative Guide for Us” is a program designed to support the University’s Black community. Through techniques like deep breathing, visualization, and guided meditation, the class creates a safe space to address racial stress, prioritize self-care, and unlock your creative potential. Register for the four-week course starting on March 20. Open to all students, staff, and faculty.
