Does e-cigarette use increase the risk of cancer?

New Rochester research led by Dongmei Li, a professor of clinical and translational research, of obstetrics and gynecology, and of public health science, explores the effects of e-cigarette use on RNA expression.

New York State Amber Alert test on Thursday

The New York State Amber Alert system will test upgraded capabilities for the Rochester area on Thursday, March 6, at approximately 10 a.m. At this time, you may receive an automated alert to your cellular phone for the Amber Alert test.


IN MEMORIAM

Flags will be lowered for Joyce Wallace

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered on Thursday, March 13, for Joyce Wallace, a physician assistant in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, who died on February 15. Wallace joined the University staff in 2018.

Sci-fi novel Mickey7, written by Edward Ashton ’96 (PhD), has been adapted into the motion picture Mickey 17, directed by Academy Award-winner Bong Joon-ho and starring Robert Pattinson. Read more about Ashton—an MRI expert by day and novelist by night—and the film, which opens this week.

Information session on Flourishing in Medicine Core Online Workshop

Register to attend a free, live Zoom session today, March 5, to learn about the agenda, topics, and format of the Flourishing in Medicine Core Online Workshop scheduled for April 14–May 19. The workshop is approved for tuition reimbursement for eligible University employees. Additionally, for Strong Memorial Hospital and Highland Hospital medical staff insured by MCIC, the Core Workshop is among the opportunities to qualify this year for a 15 percent malpractice insurance premium differential through the UR/MCIC Premium Differential program when combined with the annual online high-reliability course.

Nominations due March 14 for the President’s Staff Awards

There’s only one week left to nominate an outstanding colleague for the President’s Staff Awards. Submit your application today by completing a nomination form on the HR website.

  • The Witmer Award for Distinguished Service honors employees with careers marked by outstanding and sustained contributions to the University.
  • The Meliora Award recognizes a staff member or team whose work and performance exemplify the University’s motto, Meliora.
  • The Staff Community Service Award honors a nonmanagement staff member who volunteers at the University or a nonprofit within the Greater Rochester community beyond their usual responsibilities.
  • The Lamar Riley Leadership Award recognizes a staff member for innovative and proactive leadership.

March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

Wilmot Shared Resources lunch and learn on spatial transcriptomics

Join Wilmot Cancer Institute’s Genomics Shared Resource for its “Spatial Transcriptomics (Spatial-Omics)” lunch and learn seminar on Tuesday, March 11, in the School of Medicine and Dentistry Large Auditorium (2-6424). Students, staff, postdocs, and PIs are encouraged to attend. Lunch will be provided. Learn more and register to attend.

Fitness Center recreational golf league

The URMC Fitness Center hosts a recreational golf league that plays on Monday or Tuesday evenings at Genesee Valley Park. Come with a partner or by yourself. Play starts in late April and lasts through September, but registration is due by Wednesday, March 11.

‘Water Cures and their Role in the Temperance, Women’s Rights, and Abolition Movements’

Local researcher and educator Jane Oakes gives the talk “Water Cures and their Role in the Temperance, Women’s Rights, and Abolition Movements” on Friday, March 14, from 1 to 2 p.m. Attend in person in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425), School of Medicine and Dentistry, or register to attend via Zoom.

Leonard Slatkin, Kelly Hall-Tompkins, and Eastman Philharmonia concert

The Eastman School of Music welcomes conductor Leonard Slatkin, violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins ’93E, and the Eastman Philharmonia to Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre on Wednesday, March 19, at 7:30 p.m. The program features Body in Motion, a concerto written for Hall-Tompkins by Emmy-winner Jeff Beal ’85E. Beal founded the Beal Institute for Film Music and Contemporary Media with his wife, University Trustee Joan Beal ’84E. The performance is free and open to the public.

Population Health Coordinating Collaborative and Health Equity in Progress meeting

The Center for Community Health & Prevention and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute host a Population Health Coordinating Collaborative meeting, paired with Health Equity in Progress on Thursday, March 20. All faculty, staff, trainees, and students interested in population health and health equity are invited to attend. Register today.
