Ruth Lawrence ’49M (MD), ’58M (Res), a professor emerita of pediatrics whose career spanned more than seven decades at the Medical Center, is being remembered as a trailblazer in lactation medicine and child health. Lawrence, who died on October 12, helped propel breastfeeding from what was once considered a marginal field of medicine into a mainstream discipline of clinical practice and scholarly inquiry. In 1984, she founded URochester’s Breastfeeding and Human Lactation Study Center, serving as its director, and was foundational to the establishment of the Department of Pediatrics’ division of breastfeeding and lactation medicine in 2022. University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department will be lowered for Lawrence on Thursday, November 6.

To recognize the outstanding contributions of mentors at URochester, three individuals will be honored with awards for mentoring of junior faculty, of trainees in basic science, and of trainees in clinical programs. The winners will be presented at the School of Medicine and Dentistry award ceremony on April 20.

Kenneth French ’78S (MBA), ’81S (MS), ’83S (PhD) shares key insights from his essay Five Things I Know About Investing on Friday, October 31, at 2 p.m. in the Sands Constellation Auditorium in Gleason Hall. There is no fee to attend, but advance registration is requested for the event, which is hosted by Simon Business School.

From November 17 to 21, URochester will host International Education Week events across all campuses, promoting international education, intercultural awareness, and connections between domestic and international students. This grant offers up to $250 for lectures, programs, or activities that support these goals. Open to all student groups and departments; applications are due by Friday, October 31.
