Longtime donors give $1.75 million to support the humanities

As part of For Ever Better: The Campaign for the University of Rochester, Arnold Lisio ’56, ’61M (MD) and Anne Moore Lisio, MD, have given $1.75 million to establish a new endowed visiting professor/postdoctoral scholar fund within the School of Arts & Sciences and the Humanities Center.

In memoriam

Flags will be lowered for Walter Psoter

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, and the flags atop the Eastman Theatre at the corner of Gibbs and Main Streets, will be lowered on Tuesday, January 27, for Walter Psoter, a clinical professor of dentistry, who died on December 11. Psoter joined the University faculty in 2016.

Genesee Staff Council nominations open today

Nominations open today, January 7, for district representatives to serve on the Genesee Staff Council—an advisory body that facilitates communication on issues important to University staff and shares their perspectives with senior leadership.

Nominations are being accepted for vacant seats in the following districts: Central Finance and Administration, School of Nursing, and Warner School of Education & Human Development. Serving on the council is open to full-time and part-time staff. While only staff in the listed districts are eligible to serve, anyone may submit a nomination.

Nominations are open through January 20. Voting takes place January 30 through February 13. Email GSC@rochester.edu with questions.

Master your meals with the nutrition basics program

Two virtual Well-U nutrition basics programs start this month. Register to attend on Tuesdays, starting January 13 at noon, or on Wednesdays starting January 21 at 5 p.m. Each program runs for five sessions, and eligible employees can earn $150 upon completion.

Workshop on writing course learning outcomes

Open to all URochester instructors, this Teaching Center Zoom workshop offers support in writing course-level learning outcomes that are challenging, achievable, and directly measurable using backward design principles. Register to attend on Thursday, January 15, from 11 a.m. to noon or on Friday, January 16, from noon to 1 p.m.

Geriatrics Faculty Scholars call for applications

The Aging Institute announces a call for applications for the 2026 Geriatric Faculty Scholars Program, open to junior and mid-career academic faculty from the School of Nursing and School of Medicine & Dentistry with an interest in aging who wish to spearhead program development through geriatric education within their school, program, division, or department. The application deadline is March 30.

Mental health support when you need it

Confidential, short-term mental health services are available to all University employees. Behavioral Health Partners provides therapy and medication management for stress, anxiety, depression, and ADHD for those covered by the University health care plan. UR Medicine EAP offers guidance and support for a variety of personal and work-related concerns. Survey on APP care for cancer survivors

School of Nursing researchers are conducting a study to better understand how advanced practice providers (APPs) care for cancer survivors outside of oncology settings. The survey takes approximately 30 minutes, and your input can significantly impact future training and resources. APPs in primary care, geriatrics, psychiatry, urgent care, and other non-oncology specialties are encouraged to participate. If you are a nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, nurse anesthetist, or physician assistant at the Medical Center and affiliate sites, and would like to know if you are eligible to participate, check the survey link or email the study team.

Workshop on mastering your NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan

Are you ready to meet the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) standards for data management and sharing? Do you understand the new public access policy? Hosted by University Libraries Data Services, this virtual workshop on Thursday, January 15, at 1 p.m. will give you an overview of the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing, guide you through the steps to effectively create a Data Management and Sharing Plan, and give an overview of the NIH Public Access Policy.

Undergraduates launch affordable AI receptionist service

URochester undergraduate students Walter McDonald ’27 and Stephen Lim ’27 created OrbitPhone to help small businesses manage calls and appointments. Read more about their product, which they hope can help level the playing field for small, local businesses trying to compete with larger corporations.

Paper and plastic cups are now recyclable

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello recently announced that paper and plastic to-go beverage cups are now accepted as part of Monroe County’s recycling program. Learn more and review a list of all acceptable recyclables.
