Brain immune cells may drive more damage in females than males with Alzheimer’s

New research led by M. Kerry O’Banion, a professor of neurology and of neuroscience, and neuroscience graduate student Lia Calcines-Rodríguez discovered that the immune cells in the brain, known as microglia, act differently in the male and female Alzheimer’s brain, and appear to cause residual harm in the female brain.

For faculty and staff

Information sessions on the University-wide experiential learning principles

Faculty and staff are invited to join an upcoming information session on the newly developed University-wide experiential learning principles. Created by an all-school faculty experiential learning workgroup, these principles provide a shared framework to strengthen and align experiential learning across URochester. Your input and engagement are vital as the University moves toward a cohesive and intentional approach to experiential learning that supports innovation and student success. Hybrid sessions will be offered in the Gowen Room, Wilson Commons, on January 12 from 3 to 3:45 p.m. and on January 14 from 9 to 9:45 a.m. To receive the Zoom link, email jwren@ur.rochester.edu.

UR Stars spotlight

Headshot of Nick Searcy.

Nick Searcy, Emergency Medicine Resident

Each week, HR shines a spotlight on a faculty or staff member who has been recognized as a UR Star. Nick Searcy, an emergency medicine resident, was recognized for demonstrating excellence.

“My son doesn’t really speak to strangers, but he tries to look intimidating with a straight, serious, unapproachable facial expression. We waited in the waiting room and were finally brought back. Dr. Searcy popped in about 30 seconds after the nurse sat us down. He greeted my son first, which I personally love, as he is a patient. He asked permission to sit on the bed beside him to hear about what happened. While doing so, he was obviously assessing the concussion risk, as he would have my son clarify things in the story. After treatment, we were in and out in 13 minutes, which is fantastic for emergency room care. Dr. Searcy’s report-building, assessment skills, and explanation of the process to a 9-year-old were fantastic. He had my son comfortable and receptive to treatment.”
