In memoriam

Flags will be lowered for Robert ter Horst

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, and the flags atop the Eastman Theatre at the corner of Gibbs and Main Streets, will be lowered on Thursday, February 5, for Robert ter Horst, a professor emeritus in the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures, who died on November 2. ter Horst joined the University faculty in 1988.

Researchers raise concerns about faster aging, possible early-onset dementia, for children and young adult cancer survivors

Adolescent and young adult cancer survivors age faster than their peers who did not have cancer, according to a new study led by AnnaLynn Williams, an assistant professor of surgery, of public health sciences, and at the Wilmot Cancer Institute. The study also describes how accelerated aging occurs both at the cellular level and in brain function, such as memory, attention, and the ability to process information.

UR Procurement (P2P) Marketplace maintenance window

The UR Procurement Marketplace (Jaggaer) is scheduled to be offline for maintenance starting Friday, January 16, at 7 p.m. until  Monday, January 19, at 11 p.m. The UR Procurement Marketplace will be unavailable for placing catalog requisitions and the transmission of all P2P purchase orders to suppliers during this window. A weight loss program that pays you

Eligible employees seeking to lose weight with the support of a group can register for Well-U’s Managing Your Weight program, which will start virtually at noon on Thursday, January 22. Once your goals are met, earn $150.

Two-day course on ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’

Engage in this two-day course to discover practical tools to increase your personal and professional effectiveness. After completing the course, participants gain access to Franklin Covey’s All Access Impact Portal, featuring award-winning content on leadership, productivity, change management, coaching, and more. Register to attend on Monday, March 9, and Tuesday, March 10.

William Warfield Scholarship Fund annual benefit concert

Baritone Darrin Nicholson ’28E will join a lineup of performers for the William Warfield Scholarship Fund 2026 Benefit Concert: “Let Freedom Dream” on Sunday, January 18. Tickets are $50 (plus box office fees) and $10 for students with a University ID. Find program and ticket information here.

Department of Psychiatry Martin Luther King Jr. grand rounds

The Department of Psychiatry will be holding its 2026 Martin Luther King Jr. grand rounds lecture, featuring Wade Norwood ’85, co-CEO of Common Ground Health, on January 21, at noon, in the Class of ’62 Auditorium (G-9425), Medical Center.

Share the Warmth: Coat drive for patients in need

Friends of Strong, Advantage Federal Credit Union, and Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department are collecting clean, gently used—or new—men’s winter coats for patients in need who are being discharged from the hospital throughout the coming winter months. Donation collection boxes are located in the hospital’s main lobby, on the ground floor between University ID and post offices (just inside the 256 Crittenden Blvd. loop), and at Patient Discharge. Call (585) 275-2420 with questions or to arrange a collection drive in your location or department.

URochester basketball tailgate

Cheer on the URochester men’s and women’s basketball teams at home on Friday, February 6, and enjoy a tailgate in between games. Guests will enjoy heavy appetizers, desserts, soft drinks, and an open bar. Your ticket includes food, drink, and admission to both games. Purchase tickets here.

Explore courses Tools for Data Science and Data Science at Scale

University employees and PhD candidates seeking applied intro and intermediate-level skills to widely-used tools for data science are invited to check out the first day of class or register for DSCC 401: Tools for Data Science and DSCC 402: Data Science at Scale. These full-semester courses are taught by faculty from the Georgen Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. To learn more, attend the first class on Wednesday, January 20. Contact the Georgen Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence for the class location. DSCC 401 is a good first step toward the Advanced Certificate in Data Science or MS in Data Science. Employees can take one class as a nonmatriculated student.
