University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, and the flags atop the Eastman Theatre at the corner of Gibbs and Main Streets, will be lowered on Tuesday, March 17, for Edward Deci, the Helen F. and Fred H. Gowen Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology, who died on February 14. Deci joined the University in 1970.

A remembrance and gathering will be held for Deci on Saturday, March 14, from 1 to p.m. at the River Campus Interfaith Chapel. For more than four decades, his collaborative research with Richard M. Ryan and colleagues, along with his teaching and mentorship, helped establish the University as a global center for the study of human motivation.
