State of Wilmot address highlights progress, plans for NCI-designated center

Today, the Wilmot Cancer Institute marks one year since the announcement that it had become the 73rd National Cancer Institute-designated center. In a recent State of Wilmot address, Jonathan Friedberg, director of Wilmot Cancer Institute, shared progress highlights and plans for the future. URochester renewed as StormReady institution

URochester has again earned a “StormReady” designation from the National Weather Service for developing proactive response plans to better prepare the campus community for severe weather events. The nationwide community preparedness program is designed to help communities develop public safety plans that take a proactive approach to hazardous weather. In 2015, URochester became the first private university in New York to be certified StormReady.

Talk retirement with TIAA at the Medical Center

Visual storytelling zine workshop

Join the Department of Learning Initiatives for the third installment of the Pocket-Sized Print Phrontistery Series. The visual storytelling workshop—from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, March 20, in the Welles-Brown Room in Rush Rhees Library—uses zines as a medium to explore the creation of images and how they can be used to communicate information effectively and creatively.

Community dinner at the Gandhi Institute

Join the M.K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence for warm food and conversation at the next Community Dinner on Wednesday, March 25, at 6 p.m. Bring a dish if you would like; everyone is welcome.

Artist Charles Gaines in conversation at MAG

Join esteemed artist Charles Gaines as he discusses his work and creative process from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in the Memorial Art Gallery auditorium. Combining a career-long commitment to both systems and critical thinking, Gaines has built a bridge between the early conceptual artists of the 1960s and 1970s and subsequent generations of artists pushing the limits of conceptualism today. Voices of XR: Optics Research at Meta Reality Labs

Daniel Greif, a technical lead for laser-based displays in the Display Systems Research group at Meta Reality Labs, is the guest at the next Voices of XR session on Wednesday, April 1, at 3:30 p.m. in Carlson Library and via Zoom. Greif will summarize work towards novel laser-based display architectures for AR glasses within Meta Reality Labs Research.

Out of the Darkness Campus Walk

The Sheftall Lab at the Medical Center’s Department of Psychiatry and the URochester chapter of Active Minds invite the University community to join the inaugural Out of the Darkness Campus Walk in support of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The event, which will take place on April 12 on the River Campus, aims to raise awareness for suicide prevention efforts in the community.

Health Promotion open house

Health Promotion is relocating from the University Health Service Building to a new space in the Hollister Wing in Susan B. Anthony Halls. Stop by an open house event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, March 20, to explore the new location, learn about programs and services, and enjoy some pizza and swag.

Rochester Connects networking event

Hear directly from alumni and industry experts, get insider tips, and start building connections that can be a resource for you long after the event ends. All students are encouraged to attend on Monday, March 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mercantile on Main, 240 East Main Street. Tickets are $10 for current URochester students. Register in advance. Mindfulness retreat to help first-year students prepare for finals

Reset & Recenter, a restorative morning of guided mindfulness practices, gentle movement, and meaningful connections, aims to help first-year students prepare for finals. The retreat is planned from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 4. Registration is required.

Welcome Week student organization proposals due April 15

Fall 2026 Welcome Week program proposals and interest forms for Hajim School of Engineering & Applied Sciences, School of Arts & Sciences, and Simon Business School undergraduate student organizations are due Wednesday, April 15. Welcome Week opportunities include hosting a program or activity for new students or performing at select events throughout the week. Vera Gorbunova, the Doris Johns Cherry Professor in the Department of Biology, and her research team studied whether recreating hylaronic-superpowered naked-mole-rat genes in mice would increase their lifespans. Their findings “demonstrate that evolutionary adaptations found in long-lived species such as the naked mole rat can be exported and adapted to benefit human health,” Gorbunova said.
