In memoriam

Flags will be lowered for Charles Pollock

University flags on the Eastman Quadrangle and near the entrance of Strong Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department, and the flags atop the Eastman Theatre at the corner of Gibbs and Main Streets, will be lowered on Thursday, April 30, for Charles Pollock, an environmental services worker at Strong Memorial Hospital, who died on March 18. Pollock joined the University in 2019.

As ADHD awareness increases, it’s important to continue learning about what it is. Join UR Medicine EAP, Well-U, and Behavioral Health Partners to get the facts straight about ADHD and its myths on Tuesday, April 28, at noon. Register here.

Fall 2026 Teaching Center workshop series

Open to all URochester instructors, faculty, and staff, these workshops provide practical strategies and ready-to-implement tools. Workshops are held on Zoom on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to noon or noon to 1 p.m., and on Fridays from noon to 1 p.m.

Henry Brady, a professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, gives the next Cutler Lecture, “Can Democracy Work? The American People and their Stressed Institutions,” today, April 21, at 5 p.m. in Goergen Hall, Room 101. Learn more.

Earth Day talk, clean-up, and planting

All members of the University community are invited to attend several Sustainability Office events happening on Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22. Attend “Indigenous Perspectives on Reciprocity,” a talk by local storyteller and educator Trish Corcoran, the planting of a garden, and a Clean Earth Challenge riverside clean-up. An evening with Coco Sellman ’96

Join Coco Sellman ’96 for an inspiring conversation on how purpose-driven leadership and small, intentional actions can create meaningful change. The event takes place on Tuesday, April 28, in the Hawkins-Carlson Room, Rush Rhees Library, beginning with a complimentary cocktail reception from 5 to 6 p.m., followed by the lecture and book signing.

Free public tours at the C.E.K. Mees Observatory

The Department of Physics and Astronomy offers free in-person tours of the C.E.K. Mees Observatory in Bristol Hills, south of Canandaigua, from June through mid-August. Tours include a visit to the historic Gannett House, presentations on astronomy topics, a demonstration of the Cassegrain reflector telescope, and, if the skies are clear, observations of deep-sky objects. Reservations are required.

CulinariZone: Soul Food

The Barbara J. Burger iZone and the Center for Urban Entrepreneurship, which works closely with startup restaurants and food establishments in downtown Rochester, are bringing Chef Dede of DDEggs & More to campus for a hands-on soul food experience for URochester students on Wednesday, April 22, from 4 to 5:30 p.m.
