DHS establishes fixed period of stay for international students

The Department of Homeland Security published a final rule establishing a fixed period of stay for students and exchange visitors in F and J status to complete their academic programs or research in the U.S. The changes will take effect in 60 days. The International Services Office and Federal Policy websites will be updated with information about these changes. Monitor your email and @Rochester for updates and additional communication.

Quieting the inner critic

Join Well-U on Thursday, July 23, at noon to investigate strategies to quiet and challenge negative self-talk. This virtual presentation will include identifying and defining what automatic negative thoughts are and how to replace them with balanced, realistic dialogue. Sign up here.

HelioCampus assignment linking and reporting refresher workshop

Whether you are new to HelioCampus or need a refresher, attend a workshop on August 19 from 11 a.m. to noon to learn how to use HelioCampus to link assignments and generate meaningful reports that support assessment and continuous improvement efforts. Additional refresher sessions will be held in December and May.

Session for summer undergraduate researchers on crafting a research poster

The Office of Undergraduate Research hosts a professional development session on crafting a researcher poster, open to all URochester undergraduate researchers on Wednesday, July 22, from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. in Dewey Hall. Students in the humanities and social sciences will meet in Room 2-162; students in STEM disciplines will meet in Room 1-101.

The end of homework? Teachers grapple with cheating in the age of AI

Conscientious instructors are drafting AI policies that they post to class syllabi, says John Singleton, an associate professor and director of graduate students in the Department of Economics, “but I think the temptation is there.” Talking to colleagues, Singleton says, “Everyone feels sort of bewildered about whether they’re doing the right thing.” Moving toward presentations and oral exams makes sense, but giving up traditional writing assignments as a way to assess student thinking, “is too bad, in some ways.”
