{"id":35496,"date":"2020-07-16T16:14:47","date_gmt":"2020-07-16T20:14:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/coronavirus-update\/?p=35496"},"modified":"2022-02-10T14:40:20","modified_gmt":"2022-02-10T19:40:20","slug":"rochester-biologists-selected-for-rapid-research-on-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/coronavirus-update\/rochester-biologists-selected-for-rapid-research-on-covid-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Biologists selected for \u2018rapid research\u2019 on COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers in the University of Rochester\u2019s Department of Biology have received funding awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study biological processes involved in COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>The funding is part of the NSF\u2019s Rapid Response Research (RAPID) program to mobilize funding for high priority projects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point, combating this pandemic is an \u2018all-hands-on-deck\u2019 situation,\u201d says Elaine Sia, University of Rochester professor and chair of biology. \u201cResearchers in the biology department at the University, like biologists everywhere, have been learning all we can about the SARS-CoV2 virus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By better understanding the specific biological mechanisms and proteins involved in COVID-19 infection, scientists will better be able to develop effective treatments and vaccines to fight the disease.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/newscenter\/rochester-biologists-explore-coronavirus-and-proteins-and-covid-19-444562\/\">Learn about the University of Rochester researchers and their coronavirus research projects.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Researchers in the University of Rochester\u2019s Department of Biology have received funding awards from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to study biological processes involved in COVID-19.
