Scholarship fund supports boxing team

Vasquez '12
Jon Vazquez ’12, the first scholar
athlete to enroll as part of the
University’s 10-year commitment
to the Geneva Boxing Club

Jonathan Vazquez grew up around boxing, watching his older cousin train as a professional boxer and viewing bouts on television. At 17, he decided it was time to try the sport himself and joined the Geneva Boxing Team. Three years later, his involvement with the team led Vazquez to the University through the Geneva Boxing Team Scholarship.

Vazquez is the first recipient of the scholarship, which was created by Admissions in the fall of 2008. When Extreme Makeover: Home Edition rebuilt coach Tim Hill’s home and constructed a training facility for the team, the University showed support for the Hills by committing up to $400,000 in financial aid over 10 years to team members who are admitted to Rochester.

During a ceremony on January 5, the office recognized Vazquez for his accomplishments, and Jon Burdick, dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, marked the University’s commitment to the scholarship by presenting a check to Hill.

Vazquez, a sophomore majoring in economics, transferred to the University this fall from Finger Lakes Community College. He hopes to continue his education at the Simon School. Vazquez remains an active member of the boxing team, working out and mentoring younger boxers. He also plans to share his sparring knowledge with the campus community by starting a club boxing team.
