Site honors ‘First Women

A new online resource is dedicated to the first women elected to political office in New York State.

Created by the Susan B. Anthony Center for Women’s Leadership, the First Women Web site provides personal accounts from the women and their surviving relatives in addition to a searchable county-by-county database about women who were the first to hold various elected office in the state.

Nora Bredes, director of the Anthony Center, says the site was created to “ensure that the work of these women will not be lost or forgotten and is available to people wanting to learn more about the political pioneers of New York State. These are women who broke cultural barriers and continued work that Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton launched when they began the drive for women’s suffrage.”
