{"id":7992,"date":"2024-04-18T14:44:51","date_gmt":"2024-04-18T18:44:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/digital-accessibility\/?p=7992"},"modified":"2024-04-18T14:54:20","modified_gmt":"2024-04-18T18:54:20","slug":"key-takeaways-from-webaims-screen-reader-user-survey-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/digital-accessibility\/key-takeaways-from-webaims-screen-reader-user-survey-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Key Takeaways from WebAIM&#8217;s Screen Reader User Survey #10"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the months of December 2023 and January 2024, <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/\">WebAIM<\/a> conducted <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/projects\/screenreadersurvey10\/\">annual survey<\/a> to understand the preferences of screen reader users. The survey also highlighted the biggest accessibility challenges faced by users. Here, we&#8217;re including key survey findings as something to consider when creating accessible digital products.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nvaccess.org\/download\/\">NVDA<\/a> is the most commonly used screen reader, being used by 65.6% of respondents, overtaking <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomscientific.com\/products\/software\/jaws\/\">JAWS<\/a>, which had a 60.5% usage rate.<\/li>\n<li>For those using mobile or tablet devices, <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/support.apple.com\/guide\/iphone\/turn-on-and-practice-voiceover-iph3e2e415f\/ios\">VoiceOver<\/a> is the most commonly used screen reader.<\/li>\n<li>When navigating long web pages, a majority of respondents (71.6%) use headings for navigation. Others opted for the Find feature (13.6%), reading through the page (6.4%), or navigating via links (4.8%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Problematic items<\/h2>\n<p>The most problematic items, in order are:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>CAPTCHA &#8211; images presenting text used to verify that you are a human user<\/li>\n<li>Interactive elements like menus, tabs, and dialogs do not behave as expected<\/li>\n<li>Links or buttons that do not make sense<\/li>\n<li>Screens or parts of screens that change unexpectedly<\/li>\n<li>Lack of keyboard accessibility<\/li>\n<li>Images with missing or improper descriptions (alt text)<\/li>\n<li>Complex or difficult forms<\/li>\n<li>Missing or improper headings<\/li>\n<li>Too many links or navigation items<\/li>\n<li>Complex data tables<\/li>\n<li>Inaccessible or missing search functionality<\/li>\n<li>Lack of &#8220;skip to main content&#8221; or &#8220;skip navigation&#8221; links<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Check out the complete <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/webaim.org\/projects\/screenreadersurvey10\/\">WebAIM&#8217;s Screen Reader User Survey report<\/a> to discover additional insights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the months of December 2023 and January 2024, WebAIM conducted annual survey to understand the preferences of screen reader users.
