Local History of Racist Policy and Resistance in Rochester, NY

Participants will explore the root causes of inequity in Greater Rochester focusing on the history of redlining, racially restrictive covenants, hiring discrimination, school segregation, Urban Renewal, and the 1964 Uprisings. The presentation will also focus on local stories of joy, resilience, and civil rights in Rochester’s Black and Hispanic communities. This interactive session will focus on primary source documents, laws, and oral histories. It will help participants come closer to answering the questions “How has racism impacted Greater Rochester? How have people responded and resisted? How can we be part of carrying on Rochester’s rich legacy of civil rights and working together for equity and justice?”
