We recommend that you make copies of these documents and leave the copies with your family at home. This will make replacing them easier if you lose them. Learn more about passport and <a href=\"#visa\">visa<\/a> requirements for studying abroad.\r\n\r\n<strong>Starting January 8, 2025, a new entry requirement is required (Electronic Travel Authorization or ETA) for both visitors to the UK and travelers with connecting flights through the UK. This includes U.S. citizens. Read important information <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/apply-for-an-electronic-travel-authorisation-eta\">here<\/a> to determine if you need to apply for an ETA.<\/strong>","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"passport","css_class":"title-line t-navy t-below pt-0","title":"<h2>Passports<\/h2>","content":"Start your passport application or renewal process as soon as possible. You must have a valid passport in order to apply for your <a href=\"#visa\">visa<\/a>.\r\n<h3>Requirements<\/h3>\r\nA valid passport is required for your entire stay abroad. Some countries require your passport to be valid for at <strong>least six months beyond your planned stay.<\/strong> Be sure to plan accordingly.\r\n<h3>Application process<\/h3>\r\nPassport application processing can take six weeks or longer after you've applied, so start the application process early. For more information, visit the <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.travel.state.gov\/\">US passport government website<\/a>.\r\n<h4>What you will need when applying for a passport<\/h4>\r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li><strong>Completed passport application,<\/strong> unsigned.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Proof of US citizenship:<\/strong> Certified copy of birth certificate, naturalization papers, or old passport.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Two recent passport photos:<\/strong> 2\" x 2\", with a white background. You can have these taken at the CVS in College Town.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Check or money order<\/strong> made payable to \"Department of State\". The fee typically ranges from $75 to $150. There may also be an execution or local fee. Some offices will not take cash.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Identification<\/strong> such as a driver's license or other government issued photo ID. You must have a <a href=\"#passport\">valid passport<\/a> to apply for a visa.\r\n<h3>Application information<\/h3>\r\nVisa or residence permit application requirements and processes can vary greatly from country to country, and even from Consulate to Consulate. Your study abroad program provider will likely provide you with visa application details for your program. Find out as far in advance as possible what visas or permits, if any, you will need. If the NY Consulate of Italy, for example, requires you to apply there, you must be prepared to drive, fly, or take a bus to the nearest consulate. CEA cannot eliminate this requirement for you. Some consulates require appointments; others do not.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Online:<\/strong> Some countries or consulates may allow you to use the services of a visa processing firm. The University recommends working with <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/visacentral.com\/?login=rochester\">Visa Central<\/a> for these services. Visit the <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/visacentral.com\/?login=rochester\">Visa Central website<\/a> for more information.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","accordion_anchor":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"Required materials and documents","icon":"","row_content":"Requirements vary, but in general, expect to provide the following when applying for a residence permit or visa:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Information about yourself and your parents, including dates and places of birth<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Your passport\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>When you apply for a visa, you must submit your passport with the application. Therefore, it may not be possible for you to travel outside the U.S. prior to your term abroad.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Certification of health and\/or certain immunizations<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Letter of acceptance to your study abroad program and\/or host institution<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Letter verifying that you are currently enrolled at the University of Rochester in good standing\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Allow at least two weeks when requesting documents such as letters of acceptance, enrollment verification, etc.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Detailed financial support information, notarized, e.g., bank statements (family and\/or self), financial aid sources, etc. Expect to show proof of $4000-$5000 for a semester abroad.<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Proof of health and travel insurance coverage abroad<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Your round-trip plane ticket to your study abroad host country.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nDon\u2019t be surprised if this is not all that is required. This is why it is essential that you determine your specific requirements early on in the study abroad application process.\r\n\r\nAdditional requirements might include:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>FBI background check: This process can take 16 weeks or more, so plan accordingly<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Proof of evacuation and repatriation: <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/global\/travel\/student-travel\/\">Request a certificate of coverage<\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li>Proof of financial aid\/scholarships: <a class=\"u-link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/financial-aid\/contact-us\/\">Contact the Financial Aid Office<\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","accordion_anchor":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"Filling out your application","icon":"","row_content":"When you apply for a visa, you are dealing with the government of a foreign country. They can make and change their policies and procedures at any time. We are not agents of foreign countries, so our ability to help you fill out visa applications is extremely limited. It is always best to get answers directly from a Consulate employee.\r\n\r\nRead the application and instructions very carefully before contacting a Consulate. This will enable you to ask informed questions.\r\n\r\nDon\u2019t assume anything. If, for example, the visa application asks for your address while in [country], and you won\u2019t have that information until you arrive overseas, ask the consulate what to write in that space. Some may accept \u201cTBA\u201d, some may accept the program address, some may not accept it without the actual address. Don\u2019t assume that just because your friend got a visa in one week, that you will, too.\r\n\r\nThe visa application process is normally the most daunting and time-consuming part of the study abroad process.
