David Arthur Vineyards may fly “under the radar,” but the superb Cabernet Sauvignons it produces from estate vineyards on Napa Valley’s prestigious Pritchard Hill rival those of more famous neighbors. The 2014 David Arthur “Three Acre” Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon showcases dark berry, light licorice and graphite aromas and flavors. The full-bodied, yet plush palate leads to a long, elegant finish. This lovely Cabernet is nearly mature and promises years of peak enjoyment. The Wine Advocate scored it a 91 (which suggests even wine critics have an occasional “off” day).

This cellar-worthy trio of 2017 Fess Parker Winery Pinot Noir Double Magnums (3-liter) reflects the subtle influences of vineyard and winemaking. The 2017 Fess Parker Winery Sanford & Benedict Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir, from one of Santa Barbara’s most famous vineyards, highlights black fruit and vanilla. The 2017 Fess Parker Winery Ashley’s Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir, from a site at the cool western edge of the appellation, offers polished red fruit and lavender notes. The 2017 Fess Parker Winery Older Barrels Sta. Aldo Conterno is regarded as “The King of Barolo.” His “Granbussia” Barolo Reserva DOCG is produced in the traditional manner; Nebbiolo grapes from the region’s oldest vineyards, long fermentations, three years aging in Slovenian oak barrels and an additional two years aging in bottle before release. The 2001 Aldo Conterno “Granbussia” Barolo Reserva showcases succulent aromas and flavors of strawberry, licorice and truffle. Now fully mature, it garnered a 94 from The Wine Advocate.

 

Tenuta San Guido helped pioneer the concept of the “Super-Tuscan” with its first release of Sassicaia in 1971. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Sassicaia was aged in new and seasoned French oak barrels for two years. Situated across the road from each other in southern Pauillac, Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande (often called Chateau Pichon Lalande) and Chateau Pichon-Longueville au Baron de Pichon Lalande (often called Chateau Pichon Baron) are both “Super Seconds,” Second Growth Bordeaux estates whose wines often equal the First Growths in quality and complexity. The 1995 Pichon Lalande is superb; deeply fruited, elegant and multidimensional. It is absolutely delicious now and should remain so for years. The 2000 Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron is classic Pauillac; extraordinarily powerful and complex, yet surprisingly harmonious. It ranks among the top Bordeaux of the vintage. Though usually firmer than its cross-the-road neighbor, it also is fully mature. Six bottles of each comprise the lot.

Founded in 1973 by Fred and Juelle Fisher, this family winery is dedicated to farming and producing exceptional wines. For five decades and two generations, the Fishers have remained steadfast in their mission to produce wines representative of their vineyards sources and imbued with classic style and balance.

 

The ten-acre Lamb Vineyard is situated at the base of the Palisades near Calistoga, one of the Napa Valley’s most prestigious vineyard locations. This rare vertical collection includes a bottle each of 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Fisher Vineyards Lamb Vineyard Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Opulent and beautifully proportioned, they are among Napa Valley’s most exquisite Cabernet Sauvignons. They also are among the most difficult to find, as each vintage is allocated almost exclusively to Fisher Vineyards Wine Club members. The wines are presented here in their branded original wood case.

Gargiulo Vineyards is a small, family-owned winery located near Oakville in the Napa Valley. The Gargiulo family is dedicated to producing small lots of brilliant wine from two Oakville estate vineyards: Money Road Ranch and 575 OVX. Founded by long-time farmer Jeff Gargiulo and now run in partnership with daughter April and son-in-law Mitch, it is a showcase of classic Bordeaux-inspired Napa Valley wines.

 

This tasty lot begins with three bottles each of Gargiulo Vineyards wines. The 2018 Gargiulo Vineyards 575 OVX Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon is powerful yet polished. The 2018 Gargiulo Vineyards G Major 7 Study Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon, from its 575 OVX estate, is a Bordeaux-style blend of remarkable harmony and complexity. The extremely limited 2018 Gargiulo Vineyards 575 OVX Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon offers concentration, elegance and uncommon depth. The lot also includes a VIP tasting experience for four at Gargiulo Vineyards; a private tour of the property followed by a sampling of its single-vineyard wines, either in the tasting room or on the terrace with a spectacular view overlooking Oakville.
