The Surgical Tech must understand a surgeon\u2019s needs to make sure the surgery goes smoothly by preparing and organizing the operating room with equipment and instruments that the Surgeon will use. The Surgical Tech is responsible for assisting the surgical team by passing the required instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure, and for cleaning, maintaining, and checking all equipment and instruments to keep them working correctly.\r\n\r\nDiscover what it\u2019s like to be a Surgical Tech by viewing a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.careeronestop.org\/Videos\/careeronestop-videos.aspx?videocode=29205500\"><strong>short video<\/strong><\/a>.\r\n\r\n<em>Note: This video has been provided by the U.S. Department of Labor\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.careeronestop.org\/Videos\/CareerVideos\/career-videos.aspx\"><strong><em>careeronestop<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em>\u00a0website and the actual duties of this role at the University of Rochester may vary.<\/em>\r\n<h2>Minimum education and experience<\/h2>\r\nAssociate\u2019s degree from an accredited surgical technology (ST) Commission on Accreditation of Health Education Program (CAAHEP), or completed an American Military ST program, is required.\r\n\r\nRequired certification must be attained within 12 months by either:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) as a Tech in Surgery or<\/li>\r\n \t<li>the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) as a certified Surgical Technologist<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Knowledge, skills, and abilities<\/h2>\r\nThe Surgical Tech enjoys working in fast-paced environments. In addition to being detail-oriented, the ability to work as part of a team and stand for long periods of time are crucial to this role. Having knowledge of basic medical terminology is also very helpful.\r\n<h2>Days\/hours<\/h2>\r\nDays and hours will vary depending on location and may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.\r\n<h2>Position locations<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Inpatient Hospital Operating Rooms<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Outpatient Surgery Centers<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Work environment<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Team-based Care: <\/strong>Close collaboration with a team of providers in a high-pressure environment.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Sterile Conditions:<\/strong> Surgical Techs must maintain a sterile environment to prevent infections.
