They are responsible for giving patients explanations of the impending sleep tests and procedures, preparing equipment, and recording activities.\r\n\r\nDiscover what it\u2019s like to be a Sleep Tech by reading a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rochester.edu\/human-resources\/2025\/08\/18\/living-our-values-spotlight-sleep-technician\/\">UR spotlight on sleep techs<\/a> and viewing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.careeronestop.org\/Videos\/careeronestop-videos.aspx?videocode=29203400\"><strong>short video<\/strong><\/a>: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/videos\/health\/2022\/07\/26\/mount-sinai-hospital-sleep-techs-lbb-orig.cnn\"><strong>(Polysomnographic) Sleep Technicians on the job<\/strong><\/a>.\r\n<h2>Minimum education and experience<\/h2>\r\nAssociate's degree in Polysomnography Technology required, clinical experience in healthcare field preferred.\r\n\r\nRequired upon hire:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>AASM - Registered Polysomnographic Technologist<\/li>\r\n \t<li>POLYSOM - Polysomnographic Tech (Registered) NYS limited license as a Polysomnographic Technologist<\/li>\r\n \t<li>BCLS - Basic Life Support certified<\/li>\r\n \t<li>RPGST Boards within 180 days required<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Knowledge, skills, and abilities<\/h2>\r\nIntermediate-level computer skills required. A (Polysomnographic) Sleep Technician works under minimal supervision; hence, critical thinking and problem-solving skills are important. Must have excellent customer service skills and the ability to work collaboratively with patients and co-workers.\r\n<h2>Days\/hours<\/h2>\r\nA (Polysomnographic) Sleep Technician monitors patients while they sleep. Typical hours are overnight shifts and include weekends. Standard shift hours are three days per week and 12 hours per day.\r\n<h2>Position locations<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/sleep-center.aspx\"><strong>Adult Sleep Center<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/childrens-hospital\/sleep-center.aspx\"><strong>Pediatric Sleep Center<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Work environment<\/h2>\r\nA Sleep (Polysomnographic) Technician spends most of their time working in a sleep clinic under the supervision of a Polysomnographic Technologist or Doctor.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><strong>Team-Based Care<\/strong>: Sleep technologists collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals to diagnose and treat sleep disorders. They may also interact with administrative staff and provide education to patients about sleep health.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Patient Interaction<\/strong>: Sleep techs work closely with patients of all ages, preparing them for sleep studies, applying sensors and monitoring equipment, and ensuring their comfort.
