The employee experience\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0shaped by a single program, policy, or initiative. More often, it\u2019s the everyday moments that leave the biggest impression\u2014a manager who takes time to listen, a colleague who steps in to help, a leader who acts on feedback, or a simple expression of appreciation that makes someone feel seen.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These\u00a0everyday\u00a0interactions\u00a0go beyond our formal Employee Experience Action Planning process and can\u00a0influence how connected people feel to their work, their teams, and the University. They build trust, strengthen engagement, and help create an environment where employees can do their best work.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the course of his career, Senior Associate Vice President of Human Resources, Dan Salamone has led many efforts that support the employee experience at the University. We recently spoke with Dan about the impact recognition can have on\u00a0the employee\u00a0experience and our overall University culture.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dan, you oversee our recognition team at the University. Can you tell us about the importance of recognition on\u00a0the employee\u00a0experience?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yes, thank you. Recognition is an important part of creating\u00a0a positive\u00a0work experience. It makes people feel valued by not only celebrating and acknowledging their effort but also bringing visibility to their\u00a0great work\u2014not just the results. The most meaningful recognition often comes from\u00a0timely, genuine acknowledgment and appreciation for contributions that might otherwise not be talked about. Those moments \u2013 repeated over time \u2013 create\u00a0a more\u00a0satisfying work experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Consistent recognition of\u00a0good work\u00a0promotes relationships among peers and managers while reinforcing behaviors that lead to success. Recognition encourages people to bring their best because it is valued.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What role does the employee experience have in helping to shape our organizational culture?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Employee experience influences everything we do.\u00a0It’s\u00a0essential that we create an environment where people feel supported, connected, and able to do their best work. It includes things like listening to our team members, encouraging career growth and development opportunities, enabling workplace flexibility, and rewarding and recognizing performance. We want to make sure people have what they need to succeed. When done well, people feel valued, have\u00a0a strong sense\u00a0of\u00a0belonging\u00a0and feel good about the effort that they give every day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can both managers and staff better integrate recognition into everyday work?<\/span><\/b>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It really comes down to making it part of how we work, rather than something extra.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For managers, that might mean taking a minute in team meetings to share recent UR Stars<\/a>, highlighting\u00a0a recent contribution, or being more intentional in one-on-one conversations. For staff, it can be as simple as acknowledging a colleague who stepped in, helped solve a problem, or made the work easier for others.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Make\u202frecognition a\u202f\u201chabit\u201d \u2013 infusing it as a\u202fregular part of how\u202fyou\u202fwork is the simplest way to do that.\u202fSchedule time on standing agendas for recognition every week.\u202fRecognition should be multi-directional \u2013 acknowledgement from a manager, a peer or another department can feel\u00a0very rewarding.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
  2. Take\u202fadvantage of tools like\u202fUR Stars<\/a>\u202fto help\u202fbuild recognition within your routine.\u202fEncourage your team to make it a part of their routines as well.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
  3. When giving recognition - be specific and\u00a0tell the person\u00a0why\u00a0what they did\u00a0mattered.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
  4. Hold team recognition meetings. Celebrate important milestones as a group. Also focus on celebrating the successes of individuals when you meet team goals, complete important\u00a0projects,\u00a0or reach a new milestone. Recognize both results and behaviors that reflect our Meliora values.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
  5. Send a \"Friday Five\" email highlighting five people who made a difference that week.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
  6. Start a recognition chain where each recognized employee recognizes someone else.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n \t
  7. Institute a traveling trophy. This can be any object that your department will find memorable,\u00a0fun, or significant and\u00a0move it\u00a0from person to person each month.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n

At a Leadership Conversation forum, President Mangelsdorf, Dr. Linehan, and CHRO Kathy Gallucci emphasized how valuable that insight is\u2014not just to understand what\u2019s working well, but to identify where we can do better.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\r\n\r\nWhat\u2019s\u00a0even more encouraging is that\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0already turning that feedback into action.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0seen meaningful changes, such as improved parking rates and increased shift differentials, that directly\u00a0benefit\u00a0staff. Those improvements show the power of listening to employees and responding thoughtfully.
