The work must be considered appropriate to your current degree program, as reviewed by your academic advisor and University dean.\r\n\r\nThe training may be paid or unpaid, full- or part-time, and involve sequential or simultaneous activities with several employers. However,\u00a0<strong>all activities must be authorized prior to starting any employment<\/strong>\u00a0and before the completion of your studies.","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"","css_class":"","title":"<h2>Eligibility requirements<\/h2>","content":"All current J-1 students in degree or non-degree programs can apply for Academic Training to be used either during the course of study or to begin within 30 days after completion of studies.\r\n\r\nYou must meet the following eligibility criteria to apply:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"\/iso\/current-students\/maintaining-status\/\">Maintain valid J-1 status<\/a>\u00a0and be in good academic standing at the sponsoring school<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Pursue training that\u2019s directly related to your major field of study<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Obtain approval from your academic advisor and dean for all training activities<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Keep your J-1 record and DS-2019 up to date, including any necessary extensions<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Maintain health insurance coverage for yourself and J-2 dependents throughout AT<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nAcademic Training is\u00a0limited to a cumulative total up to 18 months\u00a0for the duration of your J-1 status but can\u2019t exceed the length of your\u00a0academic program.","background_color":"#f4f4f4","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"text","anchor":"apply","css_class":"","title":"<h2>Applying for Academic Training<\/h2>","content":"AT authorization is granted by your J-1 program sponsor, rather than by a US government agency.\r\n\r\nFor post-completion authorization, you must apply for AT\u00a0<strong>before\u00a0your DS-2019\u00a0end date<\/strong>\u00a0and the employment must begin within 30 days of completing your program of study.\u00a0<strong>Do\u00a0not begin working until you have received your AT authorization in writing.<\/strong>\r\n\r\nWith appropriate documentation, your\u00a0training will be authorized in SEVIS and a new DS-2019 will be issued. Your stay will be extended for up to 18 months at a time or for the duration of the employment offer, whichever is shorter.\r\n\r\nUniversity-sponsored J-1 students need to provide the following documents to ISO for AT authorization.\u00a0<strong>Please allow one week for processing<\/strong>.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li><a href=\"https:\/\/urcompass.ur.rochester.edu\/istart\/controllers\/client\/ClientEngine.cfm?serviceid=EFormRequestforJ1AcademicTrainingAT0ServiceProvider\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\">Academic Training e-form<\/a>: Provide information about the purpose of the proposed training activities and upload a recommendation letter from your academic advisor.<\/li>\r\n \t<li><strong>Employer's Job Offer: <\/strong>Obtain a detailed letter from your prospective employer on company letterhead that includes your job title, dates and location of employment, number of hours per week, salary, and the name and contact information for your training supervisor.\u00a0This letter should also include a brief description of the \u201cgoals and objectives\u201d of your training program.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>","background_color":"#ffffff","width":"width-medium"},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion_new","anchor_id":"","classes":"","title":"<h2>Additional processes and FAQs<\/h2>","description":"Review more guidance and details below, and <a href=\"\/iso\/contact\/\">contact ISO<\/a> with any questions.","background":"decorative","background_color":"#ffffff","style":"row_blank","expand":"no","accordions":[{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"How long can I participate in Academic Training?","icon":"","row_content":"Academic Training is\u00a0<strong>limited to a cumulative total up to 18 months<\/strong>\u00a0for the duration of your J-1 status but can\u2019t exceed the length of your\u00a0academic program.\r\n\r\nDoctoral students may be eligible for an additional 18 months of post-doctoral training activities, for a total of 36 months throughout the J-1 program.\r\n\r\nStudents in non-degree programs are limited to a total stay of 24 months, inclusive of all study time and any authorized Academic Training.\r\n\r\nEligibility limits aren\u2019t reset by pursuing a higher degree level. Authorized AT periods may be granted as either pre-completion or post-completion of degree requirements, but any period authorized during your studies will be deducted from the total eligibility.\r\n\r\nFull-time and part-time (20 hours or less per week) are counted equally against the total time allowed.","accordion_anchor":""},{"acf_fc_layout":"accordion","accordion_title":"What are my responsibilities while on Academic Training?","icon":"","row_content":"While on Academic Training, you\u2019re still considered a J-1 student under the University of Rochester's sponsorship.
