Stephen Dewhurst appointed vice president for research

Stephen Dewhurst has been named vice president for research at the University of Rochester. An accomplished virologist and HIV researcher, and respected scientific and academic leader who has been serving in the interim role since 2021, Dewhurst has been appointed to this key leadership role by University President Sarah Mangelsdorf, and following Board of Trustees approval. Dewhurst’s appointment is effective immediately and follows a national search. He will also continue to serve as vice dean for research at the School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), a position he has held since 2013.

The Vice President for Research will define and shape the role as leader of the University’s research initiatives and infrastructure, which are pillars of the University’s mission.
Research is a critical component of the University of Rochester enterprise. The University is a leading research institution, and invests significantly in centers, labs, and institutes spanning a variety of disciplines—including the Laboratory for Laser Energetics, clinical applications, optics, humanities, social sciences, and more.
Reporting to the President, the Vice President will be a strong leader and scholar of distinction. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated both leadership and administrative ability, a record of funded research and significant personal research accomplishment, and successful experience in facilitating research, developing partnerships, and addressing critical issues for the research community.
