School of Medicine and Dentistry: Hepatitis C - From Hippocrates to Cure,Distinguished Alumnus Lecture Featuring Dr. Harvey Alter
Date: Friday, October 11
Time: 10:00 am - 11:15 am
Dr. Harvey Alter has transformed public heath practice in this country and abroad, making the experience of receiving blood transfusions a safer one by helping to eradicate transfusion-transmitted hepatitis. His co-discovery of the Australia antigen was a key to detecting the hepatitis B virus, and his research led to the identification of hepatitis C, a virus that affects millions of people in the United States.
Dr. Alter will discuss the history and his discovery of hepatitis C, the clinical consequences of this infection and the emerging potential that this sometimes lethal infection can now be cured in the majority of patients.
