Some real eggheads will be behind the wheel during National Engineering Week Feb. 20-26 at the University of Rochester.
Egg race and egg smash contests will pit the engineering skills of students against the delicate but sturdy nature of the egg. Mechanical engineers are sponsoring an egg race at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 in Wilson Commons. Here the fastest mechanically powered vehicle to hit a wall -- and keep the egg inside intact -- wins. And at 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, electrical engineers are sponsoring a contest with an opposite goal: build an electrically powered device to smash an egg.
Other highlights of the week include a workshop on leadership open to all engineering students, engineering demonstrations in Wilson Commons, a competition with the Tetris computer game, and an outreach program to local female high school students sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers.
The week's events are sponsored by Tau Beta Pi, a national engineering honors fraternity, and student chapters of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, National Society of Black Engineers, Society of Women Engineers, Optical Society of America, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
tr Note to editors: Coverage of the week's events is invited. A schedule of events is enclosed.
