The current exhibition in the Department of Rare Books and Special Collections reveals some of the fascinating and personal documents from the extensive William and Hannelore Heyen Collection now open to the public in the new Hyam Plutzik Library for Contemporary Writing.
Approximately 10,000 volumes, chiefly of modern poetry, occupy this new center for the teaching of creative writing as well as for scholarly research. Named in honor of the late poet and University Professor of English Hyam Plutzik, the new library is designed to complement the writing programs offered at the University of Rochester. The items collected by poet William Heyen and his wife, Hannelore, were acquired by the University and are considered one of the finest assemblages of inscribed first editions, manuscripts, and correspondence from major American writers during the past 30 years.
On display for this exhibition are the works of such widely known and well-respected writers as John Berryman, James Dickey, Denise Levertov, and Joyce Carol Oates along with that of talented though less celebrated younger authors such as David Baker, Li-Young Lee, and Leslie Silko. All of the books and broadsides fill new gallery space and other display areas. Many are accompanied by original letters, photographs, and other memorabilia.
The exhibition, which continues through June 30, is open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
