Lennard J. Davis, professor and chair of the Department of English and professor of disability studies and human development at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will present a lecture at 4 p.m., Tuesday, April 3, in the Gamble Room of Rush Rhees Library on the University of Rochester's River Campus.
Davis, who will speak on "The Withering Away of the Disability State: A Possible Future for Disability Studies," has authored many books, including Enforcing Normalcy: Disability, Deafness and the Body and My Sense of Silence: Memoirs of a Childhood with Deafness. He holds a doctoral degree in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University and has taught at such institutions as the State University of New York at Binghamton, the University of Pennsylvania, and Brown University. Among other appointments, Davis was a founding member of the Modern Language Association's Committee on Disabilities in the Profession.
The lecture, which is free, is one in a series on the topic of understanding disability and its place in the study of the humanities. The series is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and co-sponsored by the Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development, and the Susan B. Anthony Institute for Gender and Women's Studies at the University of Rochester.
