Young people will celebrate Polish culture with musical performances and an art exhibition on Sunday, April 6, at the Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Ave. The concert, which begins at 1:30 p.m. in the gallery auditorium, is sponsored by the Polish Heritage Society of Rochester and the Skalny Center for Polish and Central European Studies at the University of Rochester. It is free and open to the public.
Sabina Slepecki, first violinist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, is the artistic director of the concert, which is now in its tenth year. Young people of Polish descent who live in the Rochester area will play a variety of pieces by such composers as Wieniawski, Fauré, Rachmaninov, Weber, Corelli, and MacDowell. They include works on piano, violin, cello, clarinet, guitar, alto sax, and trumpet. For the first time, the newly established jazz ensemble, under the direction of Slepecki, will perform.
Following the concert, eight young visual artists will exhibit their work at an art show in the gallery's Bausch & Lomb Parlor. This is the second year for the exhibit.
In another effort to promote the arts in the Polish community, the Polish Heritage Society is offering two $500 awards to music students in the third through 11th grades who have had at least two years of musical training. Winners of the competition will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 8, in the Wilson Lounge of St. John Fisher College, 3690 East Ave.
The youth concert and art exhibition are part of the Skalny Lecture and Artist Series, a continuing program of performances and special offerings for the Rochester community. For more information, contact the Skalny Center at (585) 275-9898.
