The University of Rochester Chamber Orchestra will present a lecture and concert featuring local composer Todd Coleman Saturday, Oct. 28. Coleman will talk about his newest piece, SivaSakthi, Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra, at 7:15 p.m. in Lower Strong Auditorium on the River Campus. The lecture will be followed by a performance of Coleman's piece beginning at 8 p.m. in Upper Strong Auditorium.
The concert will feature David Harman, professor of music and director of orchestral activities at the College, along with James VanDermark, Eastman School of Music professor of double bass. Other pieces being performed include Brahms' Variations on a Theme by Haydn, Op. 56a, and Mendelssohn's Symphony No. 4.
In August, Coleman was awarded a prestigious commission from the Barlow Endowment for Music Composition to write a new concerto for double bass and orchestra. This new work, SivaSakthi, is a 25-minute concerto that combines the elements of music of India such as ragas, which are melodic tones, talas, which provide rhythm to pieces, and drones with traditional western music.
Coleman's formal music training began in 1992 at Brigham Young University. He received several honors for composition including the Mayhew Composition Award and the Creative Work Award. Coleman earned his master's degree from the Eastman School of Music and is now pursuing his doctorate in composition.
