The University of Rochester's Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development is sponsoring an educational institute, "Values, Media Literacy, and Action," aimed at redefining the future direction of Catholic education in the 21st century. This program will explore the effects of the media as it relates to Christian ideals, examine the impact of the media on children of all ages, and address media literacy and its role in the development of the growing global media culture of the 21st century.
The institute will be held on Thursday, July 9 and Friday, July 10 on the University's River Campus. For registration materials, including fees and housing information, contact Edwardine Weaver, RSM, assistant professor at the Warner School. Registration materials are due June 19.
The first day's sessions include two lectures by Carleen Reck, SSND, a Provincial Councilor and Vicar for the School Sisters of Notre Dame, St. Louis Province, on "The Media and the Catholic School's Identity" and "The Effect of Media on the World of the Student." Reck was recently named by Today's Catholic Teacher as one of the 25 most influential individuals in Catholic education over the last 25 years.
Also on July 9, Elizabeth Thoman, CHM, the founder and executive director of the Center for Media Literacy, will speak on the fundamentals of media literacy. Thoman has been a public relations consultant and a journalism teacher, as well as an award-winning photographer. She has been a participant or speaker at various conferences on media issues, including the 1996 White House Summit on Quality Children's Television.
On July 10, Thoman returns to present four lectures, "Parents, Children and Television," "Advertising and the Consumer Culture," "Breaking the 'Circle of Blame': Politics of Media Violence," and "Literacy for the 21st Century: Citizenship in a Media Age."
Following the lectures on Thursday, the institute will offer an optional dinner cruise on the "Spirit of Rochester."
For more information on the Institute and the cruise, contact the Warner School at (585) 275-7833 or 275-8270.
