The Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development will sponsor its annual institute on Catholic education July 7 and 8 with this year's programs addressing some of the central issues for the future and for the continued effectiveness of Catholic education.
Now in its 14th year, the summer institute is designed for teachers, school administrators, youth ministers, church members, parents, and those with an interest in Catholic education. Programming includes lectures, discussions, and social conversation on the theme of "Catholic Education: Touching Hearts, Changing Lives."
The first of two keynote speakers, Virginia Shimabukuro, associate director of the Institute for Catholic Educational Leadership at the University of San Francisco, will discuss the identity of the 21st-century Catholic teacher. Participants will concentrate on the five themes of Catholic education: community building, spiritual growth, professional development, spiritual formation, and human development.
The Rev. Richard N. Fragomeni, associate professor of liturgy and homilitics at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, will open the institute's second day with a talk on how teachers can bring meaning to the lives of their students. Drawing from his experience as a professor and in his work with those experiencing the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, Fragomeni will discuss the role of teachers in molding the lives and faith of their students.
Also presenting at the institute will be Karen Mackie, instructor in counseling and human development at the Warner Center for Professional Development and Education Reform; Margaret Mancusco, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Diocese of Rochester; Donna Fraser, school counselor; and Beth Jelmsa, psychotherapist and adolescent mental health specialist.
All programs will be held at the Holiday Inn Airport on Brooks Avenue in Rochester. Registration is $198 ($220 after June 28) for materials, refreshments, and luncheons. Group rates and housing are available. To register or for more information, contact the Warner School at (585) 275-7833.
