Children Are Rochester's Excellence, an initiative of the Community Service Network at the University of Rochester, produced almost 3,000 hours of service by students during the spring semester. The goal of C.A.R.E 2001 to provide at least 2,001 volunteer hours to programs for children and youth exceeded expectations.
Through C.A.R.E. 2001, the Community Service Network promoted meaningful service that would improve the lives of children, respond to community needs and goals, encourage people to cross barriers and help one another, offer opportunities for learning, and enrich students' experiences in the city of Rochester.
The leader in hours worked was Tiernan Hall, reporting more than 700 hours of service supporting youth. UR Peace's Conflict Resolution Program at Nathaniel Rochester Elementary School provided more than 250 hours of service. Students volunteering through CSN with CHILD, Inc., the Little Buddies Program at Baden Street Settlement, Habitat for Humanity, KATS, and Partners in Reading at School 33 devoted more than 500 hours. The Charles Drew Pre-Health Society spent 170 hours mentoring middle school-aged youth, and UR Women in Science sponsored a science day for sixth-grade girls.
The School of Medicine's Class of 2004 contributed more than 320 hours by working with children and adults at Sojourner House, Bethany House and in a variety of tutoring and service programs. SALSA, the Spanish and Latin Student Association, worked with Puerto Rican Youth Development for 90 hours of tutoring assistance at local high schools. Other student groups working in the community included Circle K International, D'Lions, IWC's Kids to College Program, Kappa Delta, Math Undergraduate Council, Sigma Chi, and Sigma Delta Tau. Those projects ranged from tutoring children who are schooled at home to teaching swimming at United Cerebral Palsy and giving juggling lessons to youth with neurological disorders.
CSN is a student organization housed at the Community Learning Center (CLC) on the River Campus. For more information about C.A.R.E. 2001 or other programs and services of CSN, call (585) 275-5957, or e-mail mlws@mail.rochester.edu.
