The University of Rochester will hold a math, science, and computer camp for girls ages 8 to 12 this summer. Each session is two weeks long. In its eighth year, camp sessions will be held July 6 to 17, and July 20 to 31. The cost is $320 for the all-day program.
"At camp, we promote interest in the sciences by offering the girls opportunities to do activities with real math and science, to see scientists in their laboratories, to meet role models and to learn about notable women scientists and mathematicians," says Edith Kort, camp director. Kort is a doctoral student at the University's Warner Graduate School of Education and Human Development and a former professor of math and computer science at Nazareth College of Rochester.
The camp's goals are to encourage girls to develop their scientific reasoning and basic data analysis skills. Curiosity, confidence, and knowledge are raised as the participants work on science experiments, solve problems in math and science, explore the Internet, and interact with scientists. They use computer software in all stages of the program. Skills and knowledge gained from the program are demonstrated in a presentation on the last day of camp to family, friends, and peers.
Campers spend their time on the University campus doing hands-on activities as well as taking field trips.
The program runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Campers are enrolled on a first come, first served basis. Space is limited; maximum enrollment is 24 per session.
