Filmmaker and Professor of Anthropology at Hofstra University Marcelo Fiorini will show his documentary River of Gold and lead a discussion on land and sentiment among the Nambiquara in Brazil at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5, in 2-162 Dewey Hall on the University of Rochester River Campus.
River of Gold portrays the tribe's relationship to their land. It also shows their knowledge of the region's history based on their tradition of oral history. Due to the recent "re-discovery" of gold in the area, thousands of miners have repeatedly invaded the land. The video follows an attempt by the Nambiquara to expel the miners. River of Gold was made in support of a land claim for demarcation of Nambiquara territory.
The presentation, "Land and Sentiment: An Amazonian Perspective on History and the Environment," is co-sponsored by the Departments of Modern Languages and Culture, Anthropology, and Earth and Environmental Sciences; the Film Studies Program and the Program in Visual and Cultural Studies. For more information, call Modern Languages and Culture at (585) 275-4253.
